Hate crime, plain and simple. Our former leader was so eloquent when he referred to the virus that this was not a coincidence.

However, he having an Asian fetish, probably felt he needed to kill these women to somehow cleanse himself knowing the hatred of the race at the moment.

There’s so much more psychologically to this than just a hate crime. Like when a closet gay man bullies the openly gay man in front of his friends.

But he targeted women. Why is that?

ETA: What I’m saying is that it is race and sex mixed into one, IMO.

Yes, I agree. It is a mixture of race and women.

Hate crime because of racial tensions. I mean...multiple locations + same ethnicity = hate crime
But also an underlying issue with his fetish of these women. It wasn't just Asian people but Asian WOMEN in the same environment.

I also recall being at Avalon probably 15 years ago and all of these Asian girls (yes! girls! like 12-15 years old) SITTING ON THE FLOOR in the unisex bathroom with a guy standing with them. My DH, then my BF, had to explain to me that they were being prostituted in the bathroom. I almost vomited. They were so young.

What is Avalon?

It was a club in Manhattan. Before it was Avalon, it was Limelight.

Absolutely horrendous. I truly feel for his victims' families. And did you see the commentary from the chief of police? That was pretty alarming. He sounded like he had sympathy for this psychopath!

Every day I see more stories of Asians being attacked on the news and it is so upsetting.

But, on another note, I hope his "motive" brings more attention to the sex trafficking that goes on. It's so inhumane. I stopped going to Asian owned salons after I saw a documentary about these poor people being indentured servants. It's disgusting. They get paid pennies, if anything. That sheriff should be fired. The killer "had a bad day?" WTF???

The saddest part about this is that so many people walked through that bathroom and did nothing. Nothing. Can you imagine if it was your 12 year old daughter sitting on a bathroom floor waiting to be raped? Society fails women, especially non-white women every day.

Forget about society. As a society, we are useless. Where is law enforcement? Or our beloved elected officials riding on equal rights platforms who do jack squat about this? This stuff goes on in plain sight. Right in our very own neighborhoods. And so many WOMEN continue to support them by going to get their bi-weekly mani/pedis. God forbid we spend the extra $20 and go to a locally owned salon that treats their staff well and doesn't support 60 year old men getting "foot rubs" from a 16 year old.

This is what I don't get!!! I live is western suffolk and can think of FIVE of these places within a 10 minute drive. Windows are covered, so are doors. They ADVERTISE foot rubs. They aren't even nail salons. You have to be blind as to think they are REALLY giving foot rubs, because believe me, I'd be there!

So why aren't they shut down the second they pop up?

But I also can't think of a nail place near me that is NOT Asian owned and operated.

So I've been to the foot rub places in the past when they first started. Before I really knew much about what they were all about. They do give foot rubs. Real, legit, no hanky panky.
However- I am sure that if I was a man who wanted something more, I could have gotten it.
There was a few by me that were busted for illegal activities.

In terms of nail salons, yes most are Korean owned. But you can get a manicure at most hair salons too. Even Ulta now does manicures in their salon

I agree about the salons and don't patronize them myself.

But an adult woman doing nails for less than minimum wage and a child being sex trafficked in plain sight are not equivalent events. They're both bad and should not occur but they are not the same. The sex trafficking continues because no one views these girls as human beings. Not law enforcement, not politicians, not other women. No one.

Re: Atlanta shootings

It's truly awful. I think it speaks volumes that these massage places stay in business. Men going in and out of these places all day and every woman saying "not my husband". I use to go to those places thinking I found one of the legit ones, but I stopped. It's obvious now that none of them are just for actual massage.

Like seriously, the men in my husbands family (his uncles) go to those places weekly. Their wives literally think that their husbands just like to get foot and back massages. Like how can you be in such denial? I would not be able to stand for that.

I'm guessing they are not in denial but are fully aware and don't care.

It's concerning to me that the message on here is "close salons" and not "don't murder salon workers."

It's actually been found that most of the women who work in these salons are not being sex trafficked. This is their job. Did they grow up thinking "this will be my chosen career path?" Probably not. But at the end of the day this is how they put food on the table.

The best move would probably be decriminalizing and regulating these establishments. They're going to operate one way or another so why not force better working conditions for these women? Regulating would also bring to light the salons that did engage in human trafficking and presumably reduce the prevalence.

If it's such common knowledge that this is what goes on this these "massage parlors" then why are any of them open at all?

Also, I was never at the Avalon but that is beyond disgusting that this was able to happen there. Not one person called the cops? Even whoever posted about it, it didn't occur to you to call the cops the next day and report what was happening there?

Interesting! For sure this guy had an enormous sexual addiction that he probably tried to control but couldn’t and felt ashamed of it? On top of that, and what I think drove him to kill, probably was because of severe mental problems. The fact that he didn’t target other businesses owned by Asians, or that he didn’t target other massage places owned by non-Asians makes it possible to think that his motives were intertwined between other mental problems and an uncontrollable sexual addiction that was triggered exclusively by Asian women that work in these kind of places.

That was me that posted it. Honestly, no. It did not occur to me to call the police. Not back then. I was busy getting into my own trouble. Those huge clubs were wild. They had security everywhere. There was security IN the bathroom. I wouldn't be surprised if security was off duty cops. I'm sure law enforcement is was well aware of what was going on in those places. Maybe that is why they are all shut down now. Or I think they are. I have no idea. I have been out of that scene probably since 2004.

Maybe they should legalize and regulate sex workers. It happens regardless and it would be much safer for the workers. If those salons in Georgia had adequate security protecting the workers, this could have been avoided.

Both. Many of the nail salon workers are indentured servants paying off their "debt" to whomever paid to have them brought here. They live in deplorable situations, many of them in Queens. And massage parlors are just a front.

I wish I could remember where I saw the documentary on this. Maybe it was a 20/20 special. I can't remember or I would link it.

I don't think that this particular case was race motivated at all. I think that those types of massage parlors are typically owned by Asians. I know that I would be hard pressed to find one around here owned by whites, blacks, hispanics, etc. I know I will get flamed but I think that this guy was sick and it's unfortunate but to make this a hate crime is not appropriate in my opinion. He already admitted to killing multiple people, he's not going to get off.

I think he frequented these particular spots primarily due to the fact that they were staffed by Asian women. He wanted to be "serviced" by Asians specifically.

Perhaps - but I don't think that he was trying to harm Asians because Trump called Corona the China Virus. That's what I am getting at. I think that he was targeting salons that do rub and tugs, and let's be honest, those are typically staffed by Asian women. If he had a fetish for strip clubs I think that those would have been his target. That's all I am saying.

Yes, I agree. I don't think this was a hate crime. And I don't even know if he had an Asian fetish or if he just knew it was an easy place to safely get cheap and quick sexual transactions. I'm not up on these things but I don't think it's as easy to walk into a strip club and ask for a happy ending.
