I am cohosting a surprise birthday party at a restaurant in the near future. The restaurant said I can bring in my own cake, which I want to do. It's a fairly small party. We aren't getting a private room or anything; we just have a dinner reservation booked.

The party has another component to it though. In other words, we have a two-and-a-half-hour stop before we go to the restaurant.

I imagine the cake will go bad if I have it with me the whole time before we get to the restaurant. I also don't want to be lugging a cake around unnecessarily lol.

Is it weird/rude if I ask the restaurant if I can drop off the cake earlier in the day? I know I could simply ask the restaurant this question, but if it's rude to ask, I don't want to ask in the first place.

Is this a weird or rude thing to do?

I think it’s fine to ask.

Definitely not rude at all. I think it’s a pretty common thing.

I don’t think that’s rude at all and I think many restaurants will oblige.

Now if this topic causes drama, I give up. Chat Icon

I'm pretty sure my family has done this before. They might say no, if they don't have space, but it's not weird to ask.

Nope, completely normal. It is also pretty common. If it was a communion or graduation party - that is what you would have to do anyway.

Restaurants do this all the time. Not rude to ask.

The cake won't go bad in 2 hours unless its ice cream and melts - but ask to drop it off that morning instead.

Not at all! Like others said it's fine. I'm sort of in that same boat. We have our PTA dinner and farewell to the PTA Pres leaving after 6 years. We went in at noon to decorate the whole room and drop off a cake too and dinner is at 6PM tonight.

I've dropped off a cake at a restaurant the night before. No problems.

How dare you ask the restaurant to do extra work!!! (lol sorry that was for Sash : ) ).

Absolutely not a problem. I have done it in the past.

Totally fine to ask. I worked in the rest business and we would do this all the time.

I agree, no issues, I would lable the box with your name to make sure nothing happens to it and the date it will be used

Re: Is this a weird or rude thing to do?

As long as they said you can bring your own cake, then it should be no problem to bring it earlier.
