Kidney disease/failure (CKD) and cats
Can anyone tell me when you decided to put the cat to sleep or how the animal passed naturally?

Update: I put her to sleep yesterday. She had a really, really good life. She wasn’t in pain, but she just wasn’t enjoying life anymore. The vet was nice and I had it done at home.
She was found in the inner west of Sydney and adopted when she was 8 months old. Then she moved to Germany with a stopover in Singapore. She moved to Frankfurt and then on to Munich. She was an absolutely beautiful cat (Tortie) and lived until 15 and a half, with three continents under her belt. The other two, Holden and Quincy, are trying to understand.
RIP little Phoebe.

sorry you are going through this.....
My cat was diagnosed in the very late stages. When diagnosed the Vet said she had about 2 weeks to go. Within 3 days we knew it was time.
You will know in your heart when it is right. I recommend putting them down, you can be there to comfort them in their final moments surrounded by your love and support.
Love for a pet is indescribable... Allow yourself to mourn.

Thanks. I've been through this so many times with animals and I still cannot come to an answer.
She was diagnosed last month and I brought her in last night for the follow-up. Her creatinine level went up from 4.3 last month to 7 (5 is the beginning of Stage 4). Do you happen to remember your creatinine level?
I know nothing can be done at this point, and I'm OK with that. The clinic told me not to bring her back for anymore bloodwork and just to make her comfortable. I have fluids and nauseas medicine for her. The thing is she is acting OK. I mean she was jumping all over the exam room last night.
She's still eating, moving around, and using the litter box. She's very much a cat who hides things VERY well. I've had many cats and animals in my life and I have never seen a personality like hers before.
I'm currently organizing someone to come to the house when the time is right and the crematorium, etc.
And this is horrible to say, but I just want it over with.

sorry to hear of this, I think you'll know when the time is right, your baby will tell you. I never had a cat but when my dog was ready she let me know. My Vet told me, my dog will not just pass on her own, I would have to decide. HUGS

This cat won’t tell me. She is acting like she’s fine, an old cat, but fine. The vet didn’t think she was in pain, but says that she must be. She was jumping from the exam table to the scale and then to the window. I think she has a very high pain threshold.
My last old cat I had to put to sleep, made it very clear that she needs to be put to sleep (she lost her tongue from cancer), or she would starve to death.

then maybe she's not ready. My dog was stoic which is why the vet said she wont let go, but she ended up telling me and ignored it at first, then let her go.
My vet told me, when the good days are less and less to where she has more bad days over good ones, that is how I would know, but she seemed good until that final day.

my vat is 14 and on six medications. I dread the day we have to put her down, but i know it hasn't come yet.
She's still the diva she always was, just more grumpy. She still jumps up on the chairs and beds, still wakes us up at 6 am for feeding time, still dictates pettings, who can use her bed, and when bedtime is.
i did notice she sleeps more and her hair is looking older, but she is not ready.
i remember someone telling me that cats don't want you to see them suffer so they usually retreat when they are ready to go. She has been as present as ever so i will go by her signals.
as i type this, she's sitting on some tissue paper with her back to me because she's mad she has to wait an hour before eating due to one of the pills she takes. the tail swishing is next level.

Thank you. I will have to pay attention to if she starts hiding. She’s pretty diva like.
The thing is her blood tests suggest that she shouldn’t be doing well. Her kidneys are 90% not working, leaving her with a lot of toxins in her body. She doesn’t smell like that, though (I’ve seen a lot online that animals start to get a smell to them at this point because of toxins).
I’m just going to enjoy this time with her.

My previous cat had kidney failure. We had to put her down. She made the decision "easy?" for us. She wasn't eating, wasn't drinking, and lost a lot of weight. It was obvious that she decided she was done.
We had another cat that died from mouth cancer, too. She was an old "momma cat". She was the alpha in the house, even over the dog... 
When she was diagnosed, the vet said she would need most of her lower jaw removed, and even then, it wouldn't give her that much more time. We decided to let her keep her dignity, and we just kept her comfortable. We woke up one morning to her body on her favorite windowsill, looking very content.
It's never easy.... my dog is getting old and she's starting to be a little unsteady on her feet. I know we don't have too much more time with her, either.

My pit bull had kidney failure and it was such a hard choice to make. She didn't seem like she was in too much pain, but she was getting so thin and weak. After a particularly bad day (not eating, not really getting up), we took her to an emergency vet thinking this was it and they chastised me and made me feel selfish for thinking it was her time. They said she's fine and that I should be able to manage her disease. They wanted $4,000 just for further testing and I said I wanted to wait to see our regular vet. 3 days later she wasn't up in our room in the morning and was stumbling around when we came downstairs. We called our regular vet and went in to see him and he said she was so sick and that if we hadn't have come in that day, she probably wouldn't have lasted the night. We held her and she slipped away peacefully with us there.
The moral of the story- YOU know your animal best. Once you've made the decision, which is by far the hardest part, don't let anyone guilt you out of it. There's almost always going to be something else to try, but to do so is, in my opinion, selfish and not for the well being of the animal. I'm so sorry you're going through this. Lots of love to you and your furry friend.

I am kind of at this point with my cat. She isn’t fully eating. She eats when I bring her the food (wet food but only the sauce part of it) no problem. I’m going to get her baby food today because I read that she may have sores in her mouth making it difficult to eat, so softer food might be better.
She is using the litter box as usual. Sometimes she goes right outside of it, but she has always been very particular about her litter box.
I believe she is still enjoying life. I don’t know if she is fully enjoying it, but she isn’t hiding or crying in pain. She may be a little uncomfortable judging by her movements, but she’s been like that for a long time because she is old.
She enjoys her time on the sunny windowsill every morning and she still enjoys cuddles and belly rubs with me.
I’m giving her sub-q fluids every other day and she is starting to catch on and get annoyed by them already. This right here tells me she isn’t ready. I do not want to have to chase her around the house when the vet comes to put her to sleep because then that tells me she is aware. She’s also the Alpha cat and is still bossing the others around.
I hope she passes away peacefully on the windowsill in the sun.

i'm so very sorry. We put our down last friday. She was 14. We're all still grieving, but my kid the most. She's been with us his whole life so not having her is very hard to get used to.
i just keep on remembering that one line from the marvel show "but what is grief, if not love persevering?"

I’m so sorry for your loss as well. It doesn’t get any easier each time, does it? I know it gets better as time goes on, but this right after is the hard part. There is also a sense of relief after for me and then guilt to go along with that. What told me it was time was that she was starting to become incontinent.

I'm very sorry for your loss. I've lost several cats and I know it's just terrible.
We recently took in my FIL's cat- he had to go to nursing home.
She was a stunning Himalayan... she was estimated to be about 18-20 years old.
We only had her for 8 months and she died peacefully in her sleep one night. My daughter (and I) were devastated though... in that short time we had grown very attached to her.
Can I ask what your cat's symptoms of kidney failure were?
I have another cat who is getting up there in age- about 12 years old- and she has been losing a lot of weight- we took her to the vet in Nov and she was found to have an overactive thyroid- started meds. But since then she has lost 2 more pounds.
She is concerningly thin- the vet said she is now anemic and gave us some meds for that.
They never mentioned creatine levels though or kidney issues.
I'm very concerned though.. she's eating fine, not vomiting, but she seems very off.
I wonder if it's kidney failure....
