Mask Mandate Extended in NY
While I agree not to put young children in a conforntational situation. It also bothers me to allow kids to grow up thinking that they just need to conform to what they are told to do. I was saying to my DH the other day that it makes me sad that each generation is more compliant and not willing to stand up for what they believe in. That can be dangerous down the road.

Re: Mask Mandate Extended in NY
who here said they were making their kid fight the battle though? My daughter goes to school every day like a good little soldier in her little cloth muzzle. She knows it's bullshitt- but we comply. I have heard parents in my district whose children refused to wear the mask after the one maskless day last week and they were sent home. I don't think it was the parents saying don't wear your mask...i think these kids - some of whom were in high school- made the decision themselves. The parents simple said they supported them standing up for what they believe in. I don't think anyone was sending in a 5 year old unmasked against their will to make a statement. Who is making this shit up?

I am in a city HS and the nature of my job also brings me to other schools. I've been inside schools in every borough. If NYC students are any indication you could not be more wrong. They are most certainly willing to stand up for what they believe in by taking concrete action. I've been lucky enough to even do it alongside them sometimes. So don't worry, it's happening.

Have people really politicized their children to this? That to me is so gross. Children should not be doing the bidding of adults in this matter. I don't think it's the flex one thinks it is...
It has nothing to do with politics. The cloth and even paper masks don't work. It's science and is being said all over now- even from the CDC. I told my daughter the truth on the science. She asked why she has to wear a mask. Politics has ZERO to do with it- except, of course, for the people trying like crazy to keep the kids masked- for example our Governor-that is the only politics here- and yes, it's not the flex one thinks it is. And yes it is SO gross.
Wearing a mask doesn't decrease the distance droplets travel when coughing or sneezing?
Of course it does. It's not even an argument that it doesn't. Cloth masks and surgical masks are less effective, as they have said from beginning. But with the PPE shortage in 2020, it was better than nothing. The masks that should be worn are the N95, K95 and KF94. Science supports that.
I see very few people wearing the masks that you are saying should be worn. ESPECIALLY on school aged children. So if they aren't going to wear the masks that sciences supports, can you explain what the point is? Because the other masks are a little bit effective?
Also, there is science that shows other problems resulting from mask wearing so everyone should acknowledge that it is a give and take. While I have been fine adhering to the mask mandate and the masks don't bother me or my children that much, I do think it's time we stopped with this and made it optional.

I didn’t say anyone here Did this
i was just agreeing with the statement that kids should not be fighting this battle. And on this Facebook group I am part of yes parents were sending kids as young as 5 and 6 in with no mask when they were supposed to be wearing them. IMO no child no matter the age should be fighting this but I can see high school kids being able to understand much more than elementary school Kids.

I'm trying to figure out why the thought of making masks optional scares people so much. You can wear your n95, you can wear 2, you can wear a respirator, a face shield , a hazmat suit , I'm sure that 4th booster will be out for the general public soon enough because the Pfizer execs need their yearly bonuses, so why is everyone afraid of kids being in school masks optional?

Yeah I mean I do think it's silly because at this point everyone is socializing outside of school without masks. I don't know anyone who doesn't have non family members in their homes unmasked. People do full on carpools. I think it's time to let go of all these restrictions.

Lookup the Dunning-Kruger effect. It’s rampant on LIF.

We didn’t get a maskless day last week but a few parents sent their young kids in unmasked and they were sent home. The kids were so young it was obviously a parental decision. One guy went to News 12 about it.
I am over masks but as I said to my coworker, my kids are rule followers. I want them to follow rules lol so I’m not making a point by trying to send them to school unmasked.
But to the other points - they have said cloth and surgical masks are ineffective. And it’s highly unlikely unless you are fit for your super mask that it’s being worn 100% correctly as well. So many places in the country have lifted mask mandates. Maybe they will next week since they plan to start vaccinating kids as young as 6 mos (I thought it was 2-4 but I was reading it may be for infants too).

Re: Mask Mandate Extended in NY
The schools have no choice but to send the maskless kids home or segregate them because all it takes is one crazy parent tattletale and the school could lose funding from the state. Because you know. Science.

The media is what is scaring people so much. I know my parents and my inlaws are fairly homebound now and they watch so much TV. My father in law didn't want to see my kids over the Omicron surge as they were unvaccinated, but they were either home or in school, masked but would see DH who prob had Omicron as everyone he works with daily had it (and they are together, unmasked).

Absolutely and many older people listen to their friends also who don't get the correct information (like playing telephone) and they run with it.
They believe everything they hear as the media used to be where you went to get all your information and news. Now, it is all opinions and seeing how far they can push the public and get them scared.

Nell, can I ask you where in my comment did I say making masks optional scares me? Also, where did I say that I am afraid of kids being in school maskless? I responded to a poster who was asking if wearing a mask decreases distance that droplets fly out of your nose and mouth. Which it does. Doesn't it ever get tiring being so snarky all the time?

I wasn't referring to you personally That's a bit of a stretch no? I can assure you that comment wasn't directed at you personally even a little. It was in general- not just on these boards but in real life where I have seen parents fight tooth and nail AGAINST personal freedom of choices for masks. Doesn't it ever get tiring being so defensive all the time?

Lookup the Dunning-Kruger effect. It’s rampant on LIF.
Yes
It amazes me how many people on this board alone think they know more than they do.

I'm not sure how you can construe that as being defensive. You quoted me, that is why I thought you were directing it to me. I apologize if I was mistaken.
