Anyone know a marine….
Before I get my blood boiling I just wanted to see if this was true.
Do marines (or any branch) have to pay for a meal plan at base? And do they really not get discounted airfare to go home during their breaks?????
I was speaking to a marine mom who was ranting about the border crisis and how people who break the law are getting free flights, free housing, and money for food and tons of other “free” things. All while her son can’t come home yet again because they can’t find a cheap flight, mostly because the airport near base is small like an Islip and the flights are $$$. And she filled me in on a bunch of other expenses.
Is this true????? This is a true disgrace if this is in fact true.

I can't speak to the food plan question, but two of my cousins were in the Marines and they had to pay full fares for flights home.

Yes. Meal plans and airfare is airfare unless the airline upgrades at the airport.

Well that gets my blood boiling. I wonder if there is any organization you can donate to that helps them with airfare to see their families.

She’s misinformed. Space-Available flights are a thing. I think they had some Covid protocol in place though.

Yes, they’re a thing but a service member cannot rely on this act of goodwill to travel.

Re: Anyone know a marine….
I feel like there are a lot of military perks and I do think they deserve them. If the marine is on base then they aren’t paying for housing and I know they get alot of discounts on base. Trying to figure out why he can’t afford to fly out. Idk know a marine but I have alot of family/friends who are or were in the Navy and Army. They have had to mostly pay, but have also flown for free during their time in the military. I know my friend did this a lot in the army but maybe it was when she was on tour and why it was free.

Re: Anyone know a marine….
If you are deployed I think that flights home should absolutely be covered by the military. Same with meals. If you are stationed stateside to me that is the same as with any job, you would need to pay for meals and flights home.

You’re right. The free flights were when my family was deployed.
I’ll tell you my cousin who recently retired made a career out of the Navy. She knows all the perks and how to use her military status to her advantage. I don’t think people realize how to navigate the system when in the military because they make you jump through hoops.

My nephew is in the military and there's a website where people give away free tickets to sporting events and other shows/events. His wife scours the site and they have gone to a Jets game, the rodeo, boxing matches, and various other places.
I don't know if regular people put their tickets on the site or if it's the venues, but either way, it's a nice way to give back to the military!

yes, my son is a former Marine. he served for 4 years.
the meal plan (if they choose to participate) is a pre-paid debit-type card that they use on base. it gets loaded with money that gets deducted from their pay.
like others have said, if you're state-side it's like a regular job where you have to feed yourself.
