Quetstion for Dog Owners
I am not a dog owner, although I am a dog lover.
So I was just curious what standard practice was.
My neighbors let their dog out in the yard and it barks and cries and whines and yelps- clearly sounding distressed- for over an hour every single time.
I understand that dogs need to go out in the yard to do their business, get exercise etc- but if the dog is yelping and yipping and crying and barking NONSTOP for over an hour, isn't that a signal that maybe you should go let it in? Or check on it?
I work out in my yard on nice days, but even in the house I can hear this go on quite often.
I don't have a problem with dogs barking- I mean that's what they do- but nonstop without a break for over an hour- tends to drive my anxiety through the roof.
Is this unreasonable?

Quetstion for Dog Owners
Its not unreasonable. And my neighbors often do the same thing - I think they put their dog out and leave because I cant take the crying, I dont think they are there to hear it.

Re: Quetstion for Dog Owners
<-Dog Owner Here.
We do let our dog out in our yard whenever he wants, but he never barks. If we hear even one bark from him, which is rare, we bring him in. And he's usually only barking because the dog next door, who is his girlfriend, is out and he's excited. I would never leave the dog in the yard and leave. Same thing with my mom's dogs, we let them out when they want but as soon as we hear a peep they are back in. That would drive me bonkers and it's sh!tty dog ownership.

Quetstion for Dog Owners
My dog has a doggy door, so if she goes out she can come back in whenever she wants. But if I remove the doggy door (its a slider so it can be taken out), which I do on weekends, and let her out, I let her in as soon as she's back at the door. She usually scratches and I let her back in. I would never let her sit out there and cry or bark unless I was in the bathroom or something and I just can't immediately let her back in. I don't want to hear the barking/crying and I'm sure my neighbors don't either.
There are dogs in my neighborhood that are out for hours at a time and bark at people walking by and cars. I think they enjoy it out there and like to see people passing.

Re: Quetstion for Dog Owners
I have 2 dogs, and let them out when they want to go out. Our yard is fenced in, and one scratches at the door and my other barks to come in. We let them in immediately. That is quite annoying and sad to hear that your neighbor allows them to bark for that long.

Re: Quetstion for Dog Owners
Thanks for the replies- I don't think I'm unreasonable and I usually don't let things like this bother me, but it becomes grating and distracting to listen to.
Not to mention, I feel badly for the dog- she clearly is upset and distressed and shouldn't be left out there to cry and freak out for that long!

Re: Quetstion for Dog Owners
My dog is spoiled and as soon as he goes out, he wants back in and we let him in the first or second time he barks.
I do know people who will let their dogs out for hours which make no sense to me. Unless they want to be out there, what are you doing that you can't let them back in?

Re: Quetstion for Dog Owners
My dog is not a barker unless she sees something and our backyard is fenced so there's nothing to see. But I wouldn't leave my dog out if it was barking. Our neighbor's dog barks a lot when it's out. We have all our windows shut all the time for the AC so I don't even really notice it unless I'm outside.

Quetstion for Dog Owners
You are not unreasonable. We never leave our dog outside for that length of time unattended. If he starts barking we go out to see what it is or bring him inside. None of our neighbors leave their dogs out if they are barking.

You are not unreasonable . Your neighbors are.
My dogs bark when outside. They are dogs. It’s what they do. Especially if my neighbors dogs are barking, they reply. BUT I let it happen for a few barks, let them communicate. If it continues, I go out and tell them QUIET. They usually listen to that command unless the neighbors dog is being relentless. Then I’ll hurry them along to do their business then bring them inside.
I have this issue myself with my neighbor and their 2 dogs. The second I step outside, with a dog Or not, they start barking. They have a doggy door so in and out all day. It’s super obnoxious. I’m not an outside person so whatever. I don’t hear them when I’m inside

Quetstion for Dog Owners
If my dog ever barks outside I let him in immediately or I yell for the kids to let hm in. I do NOT want to be that neighbor. LOL I have the kids convinced we're going to "get arrested"

Yeah I don't mind occasional barking. Honestly I don't even notice a dog barking here and there. It kind of fades into the background noise of the suburbs like birds chirping, the ice cream man, kids playing etc. But when it becomes incessant and the dog clearly is distressed I feel like it's poor dog ownership and poor neighbor etiquette.
Glad it's not just me!

Yes - same. Our neighbors dog doesnt bark much, except when the mailman parks his truck within earshot lol. But when he cries... Its too much (and we always go to look because the first time he made that noise it was because he was in a tussle with a raccoon which was quite the show).

Re: Quetstion for Dog Owners
My dog is a member of the family, if she wants in, she comes in. She doesnt do something lowly like bark. She has bells on both sides of the door so she rings her bell to go out or come in
Your neighbor shouldnt have a dog. I have a neighbor like this also and it upsets me

Re: Quetstion for Dog Owners
former dog owner, my girl died some years ago. My neighbors dog does this, last night at 1:30 AM, it pisses me off.
I'm ok with dogs barking, but not for an hour or more. if this is whats happening they should stay with the dog or bring her in sooner.
Courtesy to others.
perhaps the dog has anxiety or just barks, but, I don't want to hear it.
Last time I went out, called the dogs name and said quiet.

Re: Quetstion for Dog Owners
I bring my dogs in if they start barking for more than a few min. My older dog that passed in June barked at everything non stop, she was brought inside a lot. Our younger dog doesn't bark as much
