would this upset you at a restaurant?
went to a local place; i don't go there frequently but a few times a year at least.
i ordered an appetizer from the specials board: fried dumplings with potato filling. I didn't notice right above it was fried dumplings with meat (I automatically gloss over meat dishes since i'm veg)
it comes out and it's meat filling. I looked at the inside for about a split second as i forked a piece into my mouth. the ground beef was almost white it was so light. i called the waiter over and told him. He said oh the kitchen sent meat?? he said he put the order in for potato. I did not tell him i was vegetarian or start up any big fuss. He took it, apologized, and i heard some discussion near the kitchen. He came back and said he just got on shift, they did not tell him they ran out of potato and thought the customer wanted meat (??) since there was no potato available.
He apologized again and asked if there was something else he could bring. I ordered something else.
When I got the bill I was thinking they should have comped the substitute due to their error. Or they could have offered a free glass of wine etc. Nothing. They obviously did not charge me for the dumplings.
In my head, I'm like that's a huge error. What if I had an allergy? The server was apologetic enough but I thought they could've done something to make up for it.
I know restaurants are hurting, and i gave a full tip anyway, but it would've been a very nice gesture.
What do ya'll think of this? Anything similar happen to you?

Wouldn't have expected it to be comped. I think if you have an allergy it would be up to the diner to make it well known. Otherwise I would think it's just preference.

As long as they didnt charge me for the wrong item sent I would be ok. I would not expect anything else to be honest. Like the PP said it would be a nice surprise but I def would not expect it.

Apology would be enough for me.
If it was an allergy situation, it’s the customer’s responsibility to inform the server upon arrival. Most menus indicate that.

I would not expect or ask for a comp for the new meal. I think it's weird though that they just substituted with the meat option without letting you know they were out first.

Re: would this upset you at a restaurant?
It would upset me for sure. I wouldn't expect to be comped though. It's more likely that the server put it in wrong and just blamed the kitchen.
When I dine with people with allergies, they normally let the server know upon arrival because even cross contamination can cause a reaction. So I'm sure that didn't even cross his mind.
Did you stop eating meat for ethical reasons? If so, I think it's great you didn't make a big deal about it. When it's for ethical reasons, it really gets more people on board when they see someone eating out without having to make a huge fuss about every single thing. The worst is when a veg person flips out because meat might have touched their food/plate. It makes it look difficult/annoying/impossible to ditch meat. Which just convinces other people that they could never do it.

Yes for ethical reasons. I 100% agree with you. I used to be more in people's faces; it doesn't work. Catch more flies...
