Backpacks in school
Does your district allow backpacks to be carried in school in middle and high school? Our doesn’t in middle school and I’m wondering if this is the norm because it’s been really hard for my 6th grader who has adhd and organizational issues.

Backpacks in school
My 7th grader can this year but my 5th grader can’t. In the past nobody was allowed to but someone grades used string bags.

Re: Backpacks in school
Dd is allowed to carry a backpack to and from school but not in the hallways between classes. They are allowed string bags throughout the day though. She brings her back pack to school, stops at her locker, packs her string bag for morning classes, then at lunch swaps it out for afternoon classes. The reasoning they gave is that the hallways are so crowded between classes that they don't want bulky backpacks in the halls

My kids never used their lockers so these kids are carrying around bulky backpacks. I am pretty sure mine had to have string ones too.
When I went to the same schools (went to your daughter's school too), all of us always used our lockers and just carried around our books. We had double to triple the amount of kids they have now so I can't imagine carrying about backpacks in that mess lol.

Yes this principal doesn't allow the backpacks- only string bags in the halls So if they don't want to use their lockers they have to figure out how to fit everything in a string bag

Same exact at my boy's middle school. No backpacks in hallways, but they have drawstring bags. They do use their locker a lot though and bring home their backpacks.

Backpacks in school
They (middle school) tried to enforce no backpacks at the beginning of the year, but they gave up and just let them if they want to. Everyone is assigned a locker if they want to use it, though.

Re: Backpacks in school
Our junior high and high school use backpacks. They have so many books they need one. They barely use their lockers because they have limited time in between the bell. They are NOT permitted to use the backpacks on wheels.

Backpacks in school
Our middle school allowed kids last year but not this year. The kids are not happy about it and a few of the kids went and spoke to the school board and have a petition going. Kinda crazy! Our middle school is HUGE and 3 mins in between classes isn't enough for lockers and running through the hallways.

I work at a HS. Students are allowed to use lockers. Many choose to carry around their regular backpacks AND their sports backpacks all day. I don’t understand it. Use a locker!!!!

My kids can use lockers but they only have 3 minutes between classes and often times can't go so they have a few classes of stuff with them.

Yes, at our school they recommend packing your morning classes then going at lunch to switch to your afternoon classes as there would never be enough time to go to your locker between each class

No backpacks or string bags. Kids use lockers. They don’t even have textbooks anymore so carrying around a chromebook case and anything else they need. This rule returned at the end of last year. During the Covid years they were allowed to carry around the backpack to reduce gathering around lockers. When the rule about no backpacks was reinstated, the kids were NOT happy about it

My students have NINE minutes between classes. The amount of time is honestly absurd.
In MS and HS, I never had a ton of time but I always went before and after lunch. I also always put my sports bag in the gym locker room. My students are carrying their school bag on their back and their sports bag on their belly.

Backpacks in school
What is the purpose of no backpacks. Seems odd to me. During covid we were not allowed to use the lockers because of social distancing but what is the harm in having a backpack?

My daughters teachers said it’s a safety issue. They said backpacks always end up on the floor and it’s hard for the teachers to walk around. One of them even said there was a bad accident a few years ago. ?????
My daughter has one binder for all her classes before lunch and then another binder for her afternoon classes. So she only carries one binder and her chromebook.

For us it's the crowded hallways. They don't want bulky backpacks in the hallways. They allow string bags and encourage them to not carry around every book they need and encourage locker use

What about pens and pencils, the calculator, headphones and water bottle. There is so much to carry, I can't believe they expect kids to carry it all without a bag.

I thought the same thing when I first heard from the teachers. But it’s actually been fine for my daughter. She has one of those binder pouches in her binders for her pens, pencils, calculator, etc. and the earbuds are in her chromebook case. They allow string bags too.

They are allowed a string bag. My DD can pack a ton of stuff in it. Bags are allowed - just not huge bulky backpacks

Re: Backpacks in school
This is really interesting. So my son does have a locker and they encourage a morning binder and afternoon binder.
But he's finding it difficult to carry the binder, the agenda book and the chromebook without dropping something. The binders are enormous and I got 2" instead of the recommended 3"!
He was also feeling stress trying to get the pm binder after recess and get to his next class on time. But he doesn't want to switch before lunch because the lunch line gets too long if he goes to his locker.
For now we've put everything in one binder and are using the chromebook bag for the supply bag and agenda.
I just think it's so stupid since they can carry bags in the high school. Why not at least give the kids the option? I'm sure some will still use the locker and some will prefer the backpacks.
