Moving to another state- where to start?

We are looking at the idea of getting a summer house, or moving in a few years. NY is just not what we want anymore. One of the Carolinas or Florida are top of our list. The whole idea is so overwhelming. How do I even start researching for nice areas? Any advice or recs would be appreciated. TIA!

Can I come with?! Lol

Our friends moved to Hickory, NC and its very nice there with a nice downtown area. I would look on Niche.com for neighborhoods with good schools if you have kids.

We were looking to move to SC. I did some research and liked the Fort Mill area outside of Charlotte and another poster who was researching the same recommended the Lexington area.

If we were to move I was leaning towards Chapin, SC. It’s a few hours from the beach but near the big lake in the area and has affordable housing and good schools.

I would join Facebook groups (there are a ton for people looking to leave NY and start getting familiar with areas.

I would start by making a list of your priorities and then start narrowing it down. What is most important to you? For me, living near the water is a must. If I am moving with kids, good schools, without kids I would only consider schools for resale purposes. If you are retiring I would search best places to retire to in those states. Do you want to live close to a city, in a suburb or more rural area? Do you want new construction or are you willing to do renovations....

Take vacations in areas you are thinking of moving to, and stay in an airb and b.

Good suggestions, thanks everyone. Forgot to mention, MUST be near beaches. It's the one thing we actually love about LI.

I would look in the Charleston area, specifically Mt. Pleasant. Also, in Florida the Ponte Vedra area (specifically Nocatee) is very popular right now for people relocating from the North. Lakewood Ranch near Sarasota is supposed to be very nice.

You can look in the Myrtle Beach area (Carolina Forest seems to be a popular area near Myrtle for LI'ers relocating, Murrell's Inlet too). Charleston area also is popular, I have heard of people moving to Summerville.

I am looking at Summerville now for investment opportunities. Lots of new construction, good schools. However it is probably 40 minutes + to the beach so depending on how close to the beach you want it may or may not work.

Keep in mind, the carolinas get hurricanes every year on the coast.

True, but we had one of the worst superstorms hit here so I don't really know if I would use that as a factor. Especially if you are buying new construction where the standards are so much higher. We get hurricanes, blizzards, nor easters, etc. Every area has there own version of bad weather at times.
