It should be even between all the employees in order to make it work and be fair.

Re: Work question
I think the bottom line here is not whether or not companies need to move to a remote or hybrid work place and whether that is right or wrong or the changing of the work place or the changing of how workers feel and what they demand as employees
Those are all great topics of discussion but the bottom line is IF a company decides to force everyone back to an office for 1 day or 5 days or 3 days a week than everyone should be subject to those same rules.
Either everyone comes in on the appointed days or it's optional for EVERYONE. There can't be picking and choosing and extenuating circumstances and well I have it harder than you because.... Because that only leads to issues as you can see.
And yes, a company may lose good employees over it- and that's definitely something for them to consider, but it's not the topic at hand.

Work question
Well, we had our annual update today.
We are expected to come in 2x a week now. It isn't mandatory being that if you have a conflict here and there, you can work remote those days but you are expected to come in.
This week we were expected in 2x - as Weds is the mandatory day and today was to attend the meeting. She came in 0x.
I spoke to a mgr in my group (we all report up to the same person) and she is equally as annoyed and has told me it is something that will be addressed.
Someone asked today (anonymously) if the company would help pay for childcare as we've been home for so long and we don't typically get pay increases.

Work question - updated
So she decided she can't come in the two required days. She told me that she can't do that right now, and also told another coworker the same yesterday. He was like WTF? You make it work!
Anywho - she told us but not our boss... Who is beyond livid she isn't here today and hasn' reached out to her. She's also annoyed that the girl is very behind on her work, which in turn is making me very behind. I did some of her stuff today so I could move forward with mine.

Sounds like an ultimatum for her. Either you come in or look for something else. Especially since she is behind on her work and she is not even coming in so what is she doing at home working?

Honestly if she can't perform her job - including coming into the office on the required days- she needs to find another job. And the reason she is behind on her work is because you can't take care of kids and work at the same time. She's home and she's not working. That is utter bullshitt

Exactly. She wants her cake and to eat it too but know it is biting her in the butt. I have older kids and feel like I have worked much harder at home but if they were younger (and yes, I am still doing things for them and the dog during the day so it never ends lol) I don't think I would have been able to put in the amount of time and effort to working from home.

I agree. My kids are fairly self sufficient when they are home but they are still there and take some of my time. It's just frustrating that they are only asking for 2 days. I've heard other coworkers chatting as well and they were equally as annoyed so it's not just me. And I guess there is a woman in the group next to me who has the same complaint but they are going to start making her come in (and her kid is now in school so it's really not valid).

Mine are "adults" and still annoying when I work but 2 days is really nothing. If she could find care before, she can find care now. It is not like she is making less money.

Re: Work question - updated
This crap is going on in my office and it annoys the heck out of me, and I know I am not alone.
Not only that, but the people taking advantage of the situation are people that aren't giving 100% from home either. I have said something numerous times to the big boss, but she is too consumed with other things to pay enough attention to do something about it.
We don't have HR department, so the only person to complain to is the big boss.

I am sorry it's happening to you too! This person definitely isn't giving 100% either. She took off most of this week so her lack of attendance won't be an issue so we will see what happens next week.

Re: Work question - updated - second update
I think it comes down to this. She is clearly one of those people that has no problem taking advantage of any situation, even if it is to the detriment of others. She's a jerk. But I feel like stuff like this will come back to bite her in the ass eventually. If it's bothering you, there is no way it's not bothering your bosses at all. I would just keep doing you and try not to worry about her because I do think it will come back to hurt her in the end. I am like you though, always doing the right thing and having people walk all over me all the time so I get how annoying it is.

Yeah - I know it is bothering others in our group too who are more senior, and my boss has made some comments. She missed the required day in the office and then shows up at the party the next day which to me is in bad form. I know she hasnt asked for an exception to stay home, and those I know who had an exception, didnt attend the holiday party lol.
It becomes a me problem when its rumored that if we dont come in the two days, they are going to make us come in more and take away the work from home option.

She would have been fired at my company months ago, but clearly her bosses don't have a backbone. Not only is she flaunting her insubordination, but her actions are hurting company morale. That wouldn't fly here.
I wouldn't worry about them making everyone come back 5 days a week. They aren't enforcing their current rules, they clearly won't do anything if you refuse to comply lol.

Can you say something directly to her? Like "hey Mary, I know sometimes you have issues with childcare and whatnot but I heard something that they might start requiring us to come in more days if they feel that the current policy is being abused.... and that would really stink for everyone." See what she says to that? Maybe she's checked out of this job and is just pushing the limits as far as she can.

Maybe in the environment of the past couple of years where it was so hard to find good employees they were willing to put up with more. I would say that given the changing times employers are about to become much more strict about this kind of nonsense.

Yep. Big layoffs have already started. The inmates won't be running the prisons much longer.
