Also, don’t stand close to the edge of the platform. This isn’t rocket science. If you’re that afraid of falling on the tracks wait in the middle of the platform until the train stops. It’s not that hard.

Exactly!!!

People pushed on the tracks today...

Interesting that this happened today. People getting pushed is actually now at an all time high since they started tracking in the 90s.

I think this makes 9 people this year. Obviously with the millions of people that ride the subway daily your chances of dying by getting pushed onto the subway tracks is tiny, but I do think that it's indicative of the current environment in the subways....

It doesnt say that they were pushed onto the tracks but, there has been a rise in pedestrian/subway incidents in the past year. A lot of homeless people walk in the subway tunnels (as to your other point that homelessness has increased back to the pre-Giuliani days which I agree with).

Someone was struck by a subway yesterday too.

On the news they said the investigation was ongoing but that it was most likely that they were both pushed.

Aah - I had just read the articles.

Someone else was hit by a train last night as well. So 4 in two days.

I imagine there’s more to the story. It seems unlikely that someone PURPOSELY pushed 2 random strangers onto the tracks because they felt like it.

When I used to take the LIRR I remember trains being canceled because someone died on the tracks. Happened several times in the year I took the LIRR. I don’t think anyone knew about it except the people who were late for work because their train was canceled.

I feel like those were almost always suicides. As far as two random strangers both ending up on the tracks, I don't think there's any other explanation than a random stranger pushed them. Why else would two strangers end up on the tracks?

My question is were they purposely pushed onto the tracks in a targeted attack? Or was it an accident?

Horrible either way, but one incident incites fear and the other does not.

On the news they mentioned that the investigation was ongoing but it appeared that they were pushed onto the tracks. It did not sound accidental.

I never stand anywhere near the tracks and try to stand as close to a wall or beam as possible. I also have irrational fears of something accidental happening that causes me to fall on the tracks.

I haven't been on the Subway in years and hope to never have to ever again.

As far as the people who were killed yesterday - the only I heard on the news was that she may have fallen and he was trying to help her. Tragic either way it happened.

Not this incident but I saw a video from about a month ago where a man was just walking down the platform- and same random crazy person came up took a RUNNING START and shoved him hard onto the tracks.
You can see in the video it was no accident and the guy had not a clue he was about to get pushed.
It was super scary to watch

Lets look at the train data from the 70's and 80's and lets talk about dangerous.

I think Long Islander sometimes live in a bubble and forget that things have been going on for years and it doesn't mean it happens everyday, every minute and every hour. Sometimes crime happens. This is with any major city.

Btw, i never understood the need to stand at the edge of the platform like you are never going to see the train or get on.

Unfortunately they didn't really start tracking it until the 90s. I understand what you are getting at but the truth of the matter is that the city was cleaned up and much nicer for a long stretch. Just because it was a shithole in the 70s thru mid 90s doesn't mean we should let it go back to that. Would you really want all the drugs and hookers and filth in Times Square again? My dad was NYPD during all those times and he couldn't wait to retire because it was so disgusting. Honestly I think DeBlasio completely ruined the city.....

Welp NYC has no problems voting for people to keep it that way.

But even “cleaned up”, there was always issues. This city and any other city always has issues with crime in and out of
Mass transit. But I would not feel unsafe to ride the subway on any given day with my kids or without if people are trying to say that. If you have no street smarts whatsoever then that’s all on you.

Yes! It was significantly better for years before DeBlasio came in. Watch The Deuce on HBO...Times Square didn't look like that anymore in the 2000s. But it's heading back in that direction

Re: Subway in NYC

My husband has worked in the city for over 20 years (except for 2020 when we were all home bc of Covid). He said this is the worst he has ever seen it. Everything- subway, homeless. He said someone was screaming and spitting on a street vendor the other day (he has no idea what happened) and the cop literally just walked by. He saw it escalating and said let me get out of here before a gun is drawn. I kid you not. He has never ever felt that way before.

A co-worker of his had a homeless person attack them about a block from his job bc she refused to give them money, then they tried to reach for her purse and she just turned away and got whacked in the head pretty hard. She doesn’t remember too much after that. She fell and hit her head on the ground. She has been out since this happened. The city is a friggen mess and will take decades to clean up. My dad said it’s getting close to what it was like in the 70s.

I have lived on the UWS for 18 years and have always relied on public transportation to get around the city. I will not take the subway today. The amount of violence I have witnessed since COVID is mind-blowing. Just my two cents, but the subway is off-limits to me and my family until the situation greatly improves.

THought of this post yesterday morning as I was driving into the city and had just gotten off the 59th street bridge and was turning onto 2nd ave as a filthy homeless man began to slowly pull down his pants. He was wrapped in a blanket but the front was wide open so you could see his entire package.... I wasn't sure if he was preparing to j*rk off or pee or take a shit but he looked deranged. Even being in my car it was scary. I lived and/or worked in the city from 1994 thru 2007. Never have I had to see a homeless guy taking off his pants and now, in just 6 months, I've gotten to see two!

Re: Subway in NYC

I used to ride the subways all the time with zero fear or worry from 2000 until 2018. Never had anything scary happen. Now? Forget it. The city has become such a dump & there’s been such a huge rise in crime over the last 3-4 years. I wouldn’t consider taking the subway again anytime soon & even going into the city which I used to enjoy doesn’t appeal to me at all anymore.

I saw this post last week and had nothing to offer but I had to go to a meeting today in an annoying location to get to by car so, since convenience is what guides every decision I make in life, I decided LIRR and subway. It was totally fine. I travelled at off peak times so it wasn't crowded at all, which at one point I was by myself in a subway car and that actually felt unsafe to me, but it was fine. I went through Brooklyn both ways. There were homeless around but no more than pre-pandemic. I just put my phone away and paid attention to my surroundings.

My friend lives on the UWS also...right behind the museum...and she says the same thing. She said the amount of people passed out from drug use in that neighborhood is appalling and nothing is done. She tweeted pictures of 20!!! people passed out on top of each other on the corner to all the local politicians one day. Gross. And all the families traversing the area to get to the museum and park makes it extra unsettling.
