Someone trying to take a credit card out in your name
Has anyone experienced this? My husband got a letter in the mail the other day saying he was declined for a furniture store credit card. We purchased furniture at this store over a year ago but did not apply for their card and used another credit card we had.
I emailed the company that sent the letter but is there a way to find out where someone tried to apply for this card?

I would probably freeze your credit just in case. Maybe someone got a hold of his info. I remember about a year and a half ago I got letters saying I applied for unemployment benefits (I am employed). Somehow they got my social security # and info... I had to freeze my credit and let my employer know that I didn't apply for these benefits.

They should be able to tell you the exact store, date and time the person applied. I would then call the furniture store and tell them to review their cameras. I would also put a freeze with the credit reporting agencies. It sounds like someone who works at the furniture store to be honest, since you were a customer there in the past.

Thanks, I will have to keep an eye out for any other weird things. I have checked the credit reports and there is nothing else odd.

Ok that is good. So odd that it would happen over a year later but who knows anymore with people. Thanks.

Go on each credit reporting bureau's website and put a freeze on your credit. That way nobody can apply for anything in your name. If you need to apply for any loans, CC's or car leases etc you can just unfreeze it
I did that when someone applied for unemployment in my name. It's pretty easy and quick.

Yes but if someone applied for a card in your name they have your information so better to be safe and lock your credit because they can try it again somewhere else.

Yes - usually with fraud they start slow and see if they will get caught before continuing to do more damage.
