Kids and coffee
Do you let your kids drink coffee (as in sip, not drink a full cup!?

My youngest loves coffee. Been having sips since she was 2 but she doesn't have it everyday. She does love bubble tea which is caffeinated and has that at least once every two weeks.
With everything, its not bad every once in awhile. Just dont hand a cup over everyday.

My kids both asked to try it, I let them, and they both hated it. I would let them sip it occasionally if they liked it.

My daughter hates it so no.
I also let her have a tiny sip of my champagne last New Years because she was curious what it tasted like and she hated that even more.

Yes my kids love to take sips of my coffee. I usually let them have 1 or 2 small sips per kid.

I don't drink coffee so no. Also I am very caffeine sensitive when it comes to my kids because my husbands family is short and I like to avoid anything that might make them any shorter. I also have very little caffeine and I am very sensitive to it.

I drink a lot of flavored coffee, so they always smell delish to DD. I've given her sips here and there and she always hates the way it tastes.

Nope. THey never seem interested in it when I'm drinking so never thought to offer. They'll get the pink drink at Starbucks when they go there. That's about it.

My grandma always gave me coffee (milk and sugar with like 2 drops of coffee) - I survived.
My kids have asked for sips but they hated it so they don't ask anymore.

I recently let my 7 y/o try a sip of my french vanilla cappuccino. She loved it and she had another sip or two another time I had one, which is rare anyway. She's never asked for a sip of any other type of coffee. She's not usually allowed soda either. We kind of limit it to parties and stuff. Juice, iced tea, water, and milk are all readily available.

She’s never asked. I’d guess if she took a sip she’s hate it and spit it out. She’s never had any caffeine except chocolate. The one or 2 times she tried soda it was sprite or ginger ale and she hated it.

So the funny thing is in Latin Culture, coffee is consumed by kids. My mom and her family have had coffee since they were babies mixed with milk and she along with her siblings are well over 80 years old. I think only in America is it a big deal. And its a fact that, soda, candy, and junk food is far worse then coffee. And there is no proven evidence that coffee stunts kids growth but yes it may may make your kid a little extra excited.
Now am i handing over my kid a cup of espresso each morning...no. But once in awhile they want a sip or a caffeinated drink like a bubble tea...i'm not gonna go crazy and forbid it. And find it funny when parents say no to one thing like coffee but just handed their kid a hot dog, chips or some Mcdonalds.

I feel like in the US there is a lot of unhealthy ideas around restricting and forbidding of foods or food groups or food items. I believe 100% in everything in moderation. That goes for sugar, candy, caffeine, alcohol, fast food etc.
I don't believe in FORBIDDING anything.
We eat whatever we want in my house as does my daughter. We just practice moderation.
She doesn't drink soda at home- but if we are out and she wants a soda with dinner once a month or so- fine. And the funny thing is she usually just says water is fine at a restaurant. On a RARE occasion she will ask for a Shirley Temple or a soda. But it's rare she even asks.
I find that once you forbid something either the kid goes off the deep end with it when they grow up because they were never allowed it, or they develop an unhealthy relationship with food which can lead to eating disorders.

Being latina I started having "café con leche" since I was around 6 y/o. At age 15 it was common to have black coffee here or there.
DS tried coffee around 13 y/o and know at 17 he has a cup of coffee with milk every day. He doesn't drink soda though. As cold drinks he only has water or milk... barely lemonade or a gatorade after a game; but mainly water. He tried sparkling water very young and hated the bubbles, so he doesn't drink sodas. Many of his friends drink alcoholic beverages (he doesn't like them), so I won't complain about him liking coffee.

Be careful the pink drink and the other refresher drinks all have caffeine as well. I just found this out over the weekend.

My kids like to dunk their cookies into my mother's coffee. That is something Grandma started so that's her cross to bear. Other than that, they don't really have interest in coffee.
As someone said, I definitely think its a cultural thing too. Although I was never given coffee as a child, I was given tea all the time. We are Irish and my mom and my grandmother would have tea every afternoon and sometimes I would join in. Or if I was sick my mom made me tea. Since I was little.

I know. I've heard. I think they've only had it twice in their lives. Neither are big sugar drinks anyway. WHen my 11 year old had teeth pulled I let him try it. LOL

A lot of European cultures too. For kids it has more milk in it than an adult would drink.
I know a 3 year old who likes coffee--it wasn't like his mom was offering it to him, but he wanted to what she was drinking, and since she puts milk & sugar in hers anyway, he liked it & makes her share.
It is probably overall less caffeine than kids had drinking sodas in the 80s.
