Youth sports - which team

Thanks everyone.

I spoke with the U12 coach and I think we’re doing U10. The U12 team has 20 players and I feel as though he will get very limited game time. They play 9 v 9. Being on U10 will allow him to hopefully develop as a leader and gain more stamina/speed/and technical skills. I honestly don’t know what the right decision is, but this is what we think is best.

———

My son is 9. He made the U10 A level team and was ratest the highest player. He also tried out for U12 and made that A level team, but is one of the lowest rated players.

What team would you pick? I feel like he has a lot of room for growth on the U12 team, but might not get a lot of game playing time.

He wants to do U12 as his entire U10 team from last year is going to be playing on that team. He also sees it as a challenge. The new U10 team has no returning players. They are all from U8 and most are inexperienced.

Soccer. He’s tall for his age if that makes a difference.

My son played up and he developed but when offered the chance to play up another 1 year, we paused because of the size differential. While he is also tall for his age, some of the boys were ALSO big for their age and we felt he was going to get hurt. So for us, going up 1 Year was fine. Playing up 2 years at that age can be risky.
Is there a u11 team?

There is no U11 for soccer in my area. Ages are done in 2 year brackets. He’s bigger than most of the boys on his current team who are moving to U12 due to aging up.

I would play up. Even if he doesn’t play a lot, the opportunity to practice with the better team will help him. And since he has already played with them - they have a relationship.

What does he want to do?

Then play up. He’ll develop more, especially when they start playing 11v11. You’re not stuck in it forever. You CAN move to different teams/town teams.

U10 gets to play about 50% regardless of ability. I think that changes at U12.

I’m talking with the U12 coach tonight. He’s actually the HS varsity coach as well and my son’s PE teacher so he knows him well in terms of athletic ability. His son was also on my son’s team last year so he’s seen him play a lot.

Well, then that would be a game changer for me. If he is the Varsity coach, then get him on that team.
