My DD started soccer this past fall. She turned 3 in July.

She'll start t-ball in our town at 4.

A very good friend of ours started their kid at 2 at soccer... but he wasn't "getting" it at first. It took him a little while to get adjusted to rules and routines.

I was interested because their kid's personality is most like mine (so far)... our DS is much younger.

Re: At what age did your children start to play sports on an organized team?

DS just started soccer, aged 3.5 yrs. If I thought it through I would have had him do T-Ball first. Soccer is a bit overwhelming for him, 10 kids all trying to kick the same ball - teammates elbowing each other and pushing each other out of the way. They are a little young to really get the concept of passing, etc. at this age and their attention span is all over the place.... At least with T Ball, each kid has a chance to bat and run.

My son is just not a fan right now, although the coaches think he's doing great Chat Icon I think he's finding the concept of going all after a ball (wait, it was MY turn to kick it! Why did he push me? That boy kicked me!) a bit hard ....

I would definitely look into a sport with more of a 'taking turns' concept at this age. I think my son gets frustrated more than he has fun. It also has to do with personality too - my son is not aggressive at all so when there are so many kids on the ball, he'll just walk away and wait until someone tells him it's his turn to kick.

WHile you can start as early as 3 for tball/soccer, in my experience with my kids, its not until they are close to 5 that they get it and want to participate actively.

Re: At what age did your children start to play sports on an organized team?

My older son started soccer at 3. Personally, I felt like it was a waste of time and not worth it. All the kids were busy staring at the sky, playing with the grass, etc. I know it's for fun, but when you work FT and are short on time as it is, I would have waited until he was older. We didn't put him back on a team until he was 5. He played soccer again until he was 6, then we tried t-ball (very boring, lol) and now he's playing basesball for the first season and he's 7 yrs old. My younger son is over 4.5 yrs old and has yet to play a sport. He turns 5 in September and will consider putting him on a team then. Chat Icon

ETA: The only reason my son played soccer at 3 was because I played soccer for over 8 years since I was 4 yrs old and I LOVED it and couldn't wait until he played. Chat Icon Then I learned my lesson! Chat Icon
