Age for braces?
If your kid got braces, how old were they when they first got them? My daughter is 8, and when I took her to her dentist appt I had asked when I should bring her to an orthodontist and they told me not yet, I would have to wait until more of her adult teeth came in (right now she has the top 4 and bottom 4 adult teeth). I just know people who had their kids start seeing an orthodontist around her age, so I was just curious.

Age for braces?
My oldest started at 7 - but he didn't have space for his second front tooth to come in so he needed a palatal expander early on. He got braces right before he turned 11.
My youngest started going around 8 but the orthodontist didn't do anything until he was 10 1/2.

Age for braces?
Both of my kids started being monitored around age 8. They would go every 6 months or so to be checked by the orthodontist. At 10.5 my older one got her MORA appliance, shes almost 12 and no braces yet. My younger one is 9.5 and still just being monitored. Hope this helps. It does seem some kids get braces very early - like at 9 years old.

Re: Age for braces?
Every kid is different because ever kid gets their adult teeth at different times. I go when my dentist tells me it's time to go. Each of my kids were different ages. 11, 12 and 13.

Re: Age for braces?
My son got braces put on just shy of 11. I started taking him for consults around 8.5. One orthodontist wanted to put the braces on then while the other 2 said to wait. His braces should be coming off in a couple of months. He just turned 12.

Re: Age for braces?
My advice would be to get consultations from a few orthodontists. At the advice of the dentist, we went to the orthodontist just before the start of third grade. My daughter just started 9th grade and the braces are still on. In hindsight, I think we started too early. Her adult teeth took forever to come in. Perhaps this is the treatment she truly needed but if I had gone for more than one consult, I wouldn’t have this feeling that we should have waited.

Age for braces?
Depends on the issue. The two kids I know with braces at 9 year old needed palate extenders. They’ll have them removed in 6 months-1 year and then get braces again in a few years. My son is 9 and his dentist said we will wait until middle school to determine if he needs them.

Re: Age for braces?
We had to wait until all her baby teeth were out. She got them at 11. It also depends on the condition they are treating. Some things need earlier treatment than others. She had a SEVERE overbite and i was shocked how quickly her teeth corrected. She will be done soon

Re: Age for braces?
My nephew started at 7. My daughter started at 10 with a palate expander. My son was told he needs to wait until 18 by three orthodontists.

Re: Age for braces?
Are Pallet expanders something new as I don’t remember anyone having them when I was a kid. Most kids got their braces in 5th or 6th grade. I was in 6th and I think my oldest was about the same age. My youngest didn’t want them and I hope they don’t regret it as they will have to pay out of pocket now.

Re: Age for braces?
I had one friend that had a pallet expander growing up so they aren't new but they are a lot more common now. I should have had a pallet expander but I had the shittiest orthodontist and my teeth were still crooked when my braces came off.

I always wondered if it is just a money grab.
My teeth moved as my dentist never told me to continue wearing my mouth piece forever like they do now.

Age for braces?
DD’s dentist sent us to the orthodontist right after she turned 7 for a palate expander. The orthodontist thought the dentist was nuts and that she was way too young. DD just went back to the dentist a few weeks ago and the dentist flipped out and thought the orthodontist was nuts for not giving her a palate expander. So I don’t know whose nuts but she only has 4 adult teeth fully in.
We have a friend whose daughter just got a palate expander at 11 and there’s a girl in DD’s third grade class with braces, so seems to be a wide range.

They had braces, then got palate expanders and then got braces a second time?

Definitely a wide range- DD has a friend who had them since third grade and still has them at 13 with no end date in site. DD-who's overbite was so bad she looked like Freddie Mercury - got them on at 11 1/2 and will probably be ready to have them off soon- after only about 2 years.
In your case, I'd trust the orthodontist vs the dentist since that's his specialty.

Age for braces?
My uncle is an orthodontist, and he is completely disgusted by how early kids are getting braces these days.
I guess maybe he’s old school, but he does not think they should have braces until they are close to puberty and have lost all baby teeth.
An orthodontist in my dental practice recommended to give my then 7 year old a palate expander, and I thought that was ridiculous. She’s still growing!!! Now she’s older and doesn’t even need one because her mouth grew naturally.

My insurance won't approve braces until all baby teeth are out. The ortho was like- well we can pull her remaining baby teeth to speed it up. I was like- there is no way we are pulling teeth unnecessarily just to get the braces on faster. I feel like they were salivating to get our money. We waited until her baby teeth all fell out naturally and all is fine. She's 13 now and will be done soon. There was no need to pull teeth to get them on any sooner

My son needed a palatal expander at 7 and it made a huge difference. His one front tooth was crooked and the other one didn't have room to come in.
After the palatal expander - his teeth were fairly straight.

I’m sure most kids look like they “need” a palate expander bc they have adult sized teeth in a child sized mouth. However, their mouth will probably grow naturally without intervention as their body grows.

I was just pointing out that some kids definitely do need it - my sons tooth had no room to come in - once we started expanding his palate - it came in quickly - and everything straightened up nicely so that he could have gotten away without getting braces after that.
