What works for me to lose weight….

Don’t think of it as cutting down or cutting out anything… think of what you can eat MORE of… it’s a mind shift that makes a big difference in helping you not feel deprived.

Eat the foods that make you feel best… for me that’s protein foods (eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, fish & meat) and veggies/fruits. Buy a lot & make that stuff the main foods of your diet… find combos that are interesting & tasty & eat enough of it so you’re full & satisfied enough not to want the junk.

You don’t need to cut out carbs… rice and potatoes are fine for weight loss. Donuts & French fries not so much.

Increase protein. Digesting it burns more calories and it keeps you full longer (fats do too).

Don’t snack. Eat more food but less frequently.

Don’t drink calories. Drink water.

Walk as much as you can. Cover as much distance on foot every day as you can. Just keep moving.

Follow a weight lifting/ strength training program that utilizes progressive overload, 3-4 days a week to target all major muscle groups.

Sleep at least 7 hours a night.

The only thing that has worked for me is WW but only if I stick to it. My problem is I end up getting bored of eating the same foods all the time, then veer off the diet so I feel like I am always yo-yo-ing.

All jokes aside I started to lose weight when I started playing pickleball. I haven't lost a ton of weight in pounds (maybe 5-7% body weight), but I "look" leaner. Always getting comments that I've lost weight. And my blood numbers like cholesterol have improved which is most important.

You just have to be careful with pickleball, lot of potential for injury with knees, calves, ankles, etc. Especially for new players.

I play 3-4x a week for 2 hours each session.

So I'll tell you a little story about my husband. He lost 100 lbs doing strict clean Keto. He was convinced he had all these issues that allowed him to only lose weight by drastically restricting carbs. (insulin resistance, etc) He was all in on that lifestyle. He didn't have a slice of pizza or a piece of bread for 2 years.

Then he started doing some research and following a guy who has a PhD in nutritional science who said weight loss comes down to one thing- thermodynamics. Basically a fancy way of saying calories in/calories out. Burn more than you eat and you'll lose weight. You can literally eat a snickers bar for breakfast, one for lunch and one for dinner and you'll drop weight. (you won't be healthy and of course nobody would recommend that but you will lose weight).

So now he maintains his weight loss by simple calorie counting. He's strict about it- tracks everything he eats on his myfitnesspal app.
He has it down to knowing his body so well that he knows if he wants to drop a few pounds how many calories he has to cut to do that.
Once you figure out your basal metabolic rate- you will know how many calories you personally need to eat to maintain or lose weight- and how many calories per day will make you gain weight.
Add in some exercise and you'll be in even more of a deficit.



I mean yeah…lol. I hope this guy didn’t pay for a PhD in nutrition to come to that conclusion!!

People love fad diets because they hope they’ll be quick fixes. But in the end it’s just CICO. And counting everything— I think a lot of people forget about drinks (especially alcohol), condiments, quick bites or snacks here and there. You have to be vigilant about counting everything that goes in your mouth.

Exactly. Pasta is ONE cup. That is like NOTHING lol. That is why I try and make some veggies to mix them with it.
Rice and other pasta's in the bags or boxes are not much either. My family eats the equivalent of like 10 people lol

Two pieces of advice. Invest in a food scale to track portion sizes and increase your NEAT (non exercise activity). Get a step tracker and set your goal a little higher each day/week. Most Americans are sedentary. Increasing steps by 500-1000 daily will help.

Exactly. Pasta is ONE cup. That is like NOTHING lol. That is why I try and make some veggies to mix them with it.
Rice and other pasta's in the bags or boxes are not much either. My family eats the equivalent of like 10 people lol



On a food scale, one cup is 56 g. That’s all I eat (plus protein and a veggie) and always feel full. Once you get used the the serving, it gets better. Americans are used to oversized portions. I love my food scale - it’s really allowed me to better understand portion sizes.

Yup, portion sizes are too big and we have all just gotten used to that.
