Is there one you prefer to use? That's the one you will use more frequently and therefore get better results.

Re: Elliptical vs treadmill

I've always liked the elliptical machine...it's usually taken at my gym all the time. It's also good for people with bad knees...it's not so harsh on them.Chat Icon

Re: Elliptical vs treadmill

i like the elliptical better too. I hate running and never last more than 10 minutes on the treadmill but the elliptical i can go for over half an hour.

Re: Elliptical vs treadmill

I heard that the b/c the ellipticals are rather new, that the calorie burnt counters aren't as reliable as the treadmills- which have been around for a while and are pretty much perfected....
they said that the calories burned would be roughly the same on treadmill & elliptical.
I read this in self magazine or some magazine like it.

I like the elliptical better than the treadmill. The treadmill is hard on my knees, and I can't go very fast. On the elliptical, I can go faster at a higher difficulty. I heard the same thing about the accuracy of the calorie counter of the ellipticals, but I don't worry too much about it. I know I'm working pretty hard when I sweat like a pig and my legs ache afterwards! Chat Icon

Re: Elliptical vs treadmill

My trainer told me that for weight loss you have to do the treadmill because your weight is not supported. In her opinion that will give you quicker weight loss than the eliptical. You must not hold on and pump your arms as well as doing an interval workout. 3 mins walk, 1 minute fast walk 3 mins walk one minute run etc.

Could you increase the resistance on the elliptical to compensate? Chat Icon

Re: Elliptical vs treadmill

I think it is that people hold on on the eliptical and your weight is supported. I think she meant that you should not be holding on to anything. I assume upping the resistance would help to raise your heart rate and then burn more calories.

I like to run (treadmill and roads) so for me its the treadmill - I blow the calorie count away on the elliptical - but I can see if you just walk the calories wouldn't surpass the elliptical.

but I also heard that the programs on the machines are calculated with men's body types and women don't burn as many calories - so you have to cut your weight by 10% when you put it into the machine

ex. if you are 150 - put in 135 for a more accurate count

Re: Elliptical vs treadmill

The treadmill is better for weight loss if you run. Running is one of the biggest calorie burners (and of course the more of an incline you do, the more calories you burn).

Now, I'm not sure at what speed you would have to run in order to burn more calories than the elliptical, because there's "running" and there's "jogging".
The best way to know how many calories you're burning is to wear a heart rate monitor that calculates calorie burn. I wouldn't trust what the cardio machines say.

This is true - I always put a lower weight in when I use the cardio machines. It ***** to see that after 30 minutes of sweating you burned less than 200 calories! Chat Icon
