To save money don't get a changing table - just buy a dresser and get a changing pad for the top :)

It is VERY doable. There is no need to spend hundreds of dollars on nursery furniture. You can still have a very cute, well put together nursery for that price of $500. When you consider how little time the child will use it's nursery furniture is it really worth it?
As a momma of twins that basically is my budget and I have to buy 2 cribs. I will not have another pregnancy so it's silly to spend more money IMO.
Dressers- old IKEA ones w/ changing pad on top
Glider- $30 at church sale
Changing table for 1st floor- $20 church sale
Bedding- no set, individual mix and match. They can't use a blanket or quilt until 1 year anyway
Valances for windows- I'm buyng an extra sheet or two and making them.
Cribs- I wanted to do a used crib but so hard to find two of the same style so we might have to buy new but they will be inexpensive.

We are going to get a dresser , no changing table and No bedding set ( which is $$$$) because I wont use the bedding b/c of Sids...so all we need is some sheets .

some are but some are less than 300.

yeah, when I say bedding, I mean just the sheets
but - I'm thinking I will need a dresser - I need to keep all baby clothes away from my cat, who I can certainly see him sleeping in any baby clothes, claiming they are his, or even worse - peeing in them!!!

Our crib is from Penney's. We also got a dresser- since MIL was buying, I wanted to be frugal and I think with the shipping etc, it was a little over $500. We chose not to get a changing table either- our nursery is small, and a changing table is just another thing I'd have to eventually give away. The dresser we picked will grow with the baby and part of the crib can be used as a full-sized head board.

No!
You just have to keep the whole baby furniture thing in perspective.
I shopped around and got crib, two nightstands and dresser/changing table for $500.
They were on sale..and I wasn't really picky about certain things. The crib is not convertible...
