Re: San Francisco???
I spent 5 days in SF back in 2002...and would definitely go back. It's the side trips that make the city even more appealing, imo - Muir Woods, Half Moon Bay, the drive down Rt 1 and back up Rt 17, Golden Gate Bridge & Park.
We stayed in Union Sq - great central location, nice hotel (Hotel Vintage Court). I wouldn't stay at Fisherman's Wharf - very touristy and a little out of the way from the heart of the city (Union Sq).
Hit up Sears Fine Food for breakfast and Greens Restaurant in the Marina/Pacific Heights (especially if you're a vegetarian...but still fantastic eats if you're not).
Have fun!

Re: San Francisco???
We stayed at the Grand Hyatt in Union Square and liked it. Transportation was all around us. We rented a car for 2 days that was delivered to the hotel (and picked up) to do some long distance driving.

Re: San Francisco???
I am leaving for a work related trip on friday for the weekend. I am staying at the grand hyatt. I think it is in Union square....I am actually hoping it is!
BUT
DH & I went to SF back in Sept on vac. There is so much to do there. We stayed in SF for 2 full days, and then went to Napa for 3 full days. (Visited muir woods on the way)
Personally, I do not think you need a week there, I think you can do it in less, but it would also depend on any side trips you might want to do.
We stayed in Union Square. I cant remember the name of the hotel. But it was great, and I am hoping that is where I will stay this wkd.

Re: San Francisco???
We stayed at the Courtyard Marriot on Second, but only because of work. There is another on Fisherman's Wharf which has a great view & is closer to alot more.
You can do it in 5 days, but if you want to travel the coast to Ano Nuevo or Half Moon Bay I recommend a full week.
Have fun!
