Would you stay in the Olympic area or just visit it for a day trip?
If went in September would it be too cold for the beach...and one more question...
what would be the best area to stay
(we are thinking maybe a Madrid/Barcelona trip)

hotel arts is awesome so stay near there if you are stying in the olympic area. the olympic area is great for summer/fall when its warm- september is still considered summer- hell, the bars were open there in january with heaters so i can imagine the best nightlife in that area must be ridicuous when its warm!
another area is gothic quarter/el born area. you can use the picasso museum as a good location. try to find hotels near there or near the restaurant Taller de Tapas.
I have had great luck with trip advisor.
Also dont get fooled by staying near ramblas- Ramblas is over rated. Save yourself a trip and stay where I mentioned or else you will be taking expensive cabs to all the cool places from Las Ramblas.
In a residentail but trendy part of town Hotel Majestic is near some cool restaurants (but north of El Born and way north of the Olympic area) but its a gorgeous hotel with a top rated restaurant so consider there as well.
Near the Ramblas Hotel Jazz and My hotel H10 Universitat are great places for the $.
