Mini Review of our Chicago weekend
Here’s a brief review of our very brief stay in Chicago this past weekend. DH and I had an absolute blast, and I whole-heartedly recommend Chicago – there’s so much to do/see there!
Flight:
We flew on Jet Blue on their introductory offer to Chicago O’Hare. The fare was less than $40pp each way, prompting us to book quickly. I didn’t even know a lot about what I wanted to do in Chicago – just that I wanted to go there.
Transportation to/from airport:
We hit a lot of traffic arriving in Chicago on Friday night, and was greeted by a hefty cab fare by the time we got to our hotel on the Magnificent Mile. On the way back to the airport, we took the Blue Line EL straight to the airport for a fraction of the price of a cab. It was really convenient, and fast, as most of the transportation in the city.
Hotel:
We booked our two night stay at the Crowne Plaza Allerton. The hotel is a historic landmark, and therefore, very charming. The room was a little on the small side, but it suited us fine. This hotel on Michigan Avenue is walking distance from great Chicago shopping, dining, museums, and beautiful scenic views.
Food:
I wanted good deep dish pizza, and did a lot of research to find the best pizza around. After a lot of reviews, we decided on Giordano’s. Touted as “Chicago’s World famous Stuffed Pizza”, this place was no joke. The pizza was awesome…..very delicious….very filling. A true Chicago treat.

DH and I watch a lot of cooking shows, so it was no surprise that we wanted to check out Frontera, a restaurant by chef Rick Bayless. Because of timing, we never made it to the actual restaurant, but we went to the next best thing – Frontera Fresco. Located in Macy’s State Street, this smaller version of the real deal was super tasty. Their limited menu had salads, pannis, and other authentic Mexican Food. Our last reviewable meal in Chicago was at The Signature Room at the 95th, located atop the John Hancock Center. Here, we had an amazing brunch, complimented with views of the city. We were luck enough to have a table right next to the window, enabling us to scout out all the places we’d need to visit next time. http://www.signatureroom.com/
Sight-seeing:
Field Museum – I can’t even tell you the last time I was in a museum. They had a lot of great exhibits here. Fun for the whole family.
Solider Field – The Bears were playing in the NFC Championship game, so there was a great vibe around the arena. We’re big sports fans, so we checked it out.
Wrigley Field – Did I mention, we’re big sports fans? Wrigley Field, and the surrounding Wrigleyville was just a fun place to be around. Lots of big baseball fans around here, bars, and little shops.
Contemporary Art Museum – We should have went to The Art Institute instead. If you have to pick one or the other, pick the latter.
Magnificent Mile – great shopping here, and affordable for everyone!
Well, that’s it….it was a whirlwind – but so much fun. We’re definitely going back when the weather is less severe. Thanks to Azad for all your help!
