Bloody Paw/Nail

Without realizing we would cause damage, we took Boogie on a long walk and a playtime at the tennis courts - Well, when we got him home, his nails were red and his paws were red and one nail was bleeding... we gave him a bath,he was a mess-and blood was all over the floor-

we called the vet but they arent in, he does NOT seem to be in pain- BUT I would like to know how to get the bleeding to stop!

PLEASE help

Where do you live? Can you take him to an emergency vet?

Try:

LIVS

Or Island Rescue in Bayshore.

Please take him to a vet asap.

will do, DH is taking care of it now--- Online I found something that said to put antibacterial ointment on it and then wrap it up with bandages, so thats what he is doing now

Re: Bloody Paw/Nail

He probably cut his quick...if his pads aren't bleeding, but a nail is then the nail probably just broke up to the quick. Especially if he doesn't seem to be in distress. If the bleeding has stopped and you put a bandage on that paw, I wouldn't stress too much. See how it looks tomorrow.
I cut Misty's quick once and she bled like a pig for about an hour...I was beside myself, but she wasn't reacting at all. After an hour or so, the bleeding stopped and everything was fine. I am now extremely careful when I cut her nails that I don't go near the quick.

Re: Bloody Paw/Nail

what is a dew claw?

We called the emergency vet and they told us if it didn't stop bleeding, or stopped and started up again to take him in, but at that point we got it to stop- His nails and paws were pretty bad though- I felt awful, it was completely my fault and I felt so guilty!

He was never in pain so that was good- and he seems fine now as well...

thanks everyone!

ETA: nevermind, I looked up dew claws- I know what it is now... It wasn't his dew claws, it was his paws and nails, I think it was the "quick" like an above poster said!

Cooper has cracked both of his dew claws in the past.... NASTY!!!

Be careful when the weather starts to get warmer. Our vet said they see a lot of broken/cracked & bleeding nails in the spring because during the winter the dog isn't outside as much so their nails get longer and tend to get caught. Glad your pupper is OK!!
