DOE
So I had my interview today at the DOE.. he offered me a commitment letter however I was shocked when he told me that if I accept the letter I could not work in region 3 or region 9 even if I got the job on my own. I turned it down because I just didn't see the point in basically limiting my search. I wonder, do people know about this?

Re: DOE
Did he tell you why you could not work in those Regions? I've never heard of anyone telling an employee that. And it's going to be moot anyway (I'd think) because the regions are being dismanteled and we are going back to the district system.

He was basically saying that if I accept the letter I cannot accept a job in that region even if I get it on my own. Clearly I know that I was never going to be placed there, but he was saying that I couldn't work there period. But this is only if I accept the letter. I was looking at him, like dude I'm trying to broaden my search not limit it. It just makes no sense to me. So I turned it down and I will continue to look on my own. Hopefully something will come up.

I have learned from experience there is no rhyme or reason to the NYC DOE....I went to a job fair few years ago iin Brooklyn. I sat down with someone from Region 6...I had never ever taught before she asked me a couple of questions and then said "you will never ever get a teaching job"
5 minutes later I was hired by a principal
Seriously...these people do not know what is going on...trust me

Re: DOE
Yes I have heard of this, my friend had trouble obtaining a position in my school because of this. But it all worked out, my principal had to fight for her. It doesn't make much sense, they want to be hired in the not-so-diserable needed areas.

I don't understand??? Why can't you get a job in region 3 or 9 if it is offered to you? I work in region 9 and there are always openings.

Re: DOE
OMG I did not know this. When I got my letter she never said it was limited. She said I could go to fairs or obtain a job on my own!!!! I have to look into this now.

I don't know why...he explained it but at that point I just wanted to get out of their since I had already wasted so much time. Are there openings for elementary in region 9 and do you know of any? My first choice is queens but I would work in manhattan.

Re: DOE
The reason why they do not offer commitment letters for Regions 3 AND 9 is because those regions are in high demands. 3 IS the closest to LI and 9 is Staten Island.. so principals can pick and chose. Also. .I hear the city is doing away with regions.. we will see.. OH THE BOE.. I WORK IN 5 AND LOVE IT

Region 9 is manhattan. I work in a high school in Union Square. I don't know about elem ed but I know with HS there are always openings and I don't know why they would get rid of regions when they just did away with districts a few years ago????

Re: DOE
They are supposedly going back to 4 regions.. and the principal can pick which regional superindentant the school will be under.
