Re: English lab verse american lab
The English one has tea & finger sandwiches at 3pm every afternoon and the American one doesn't.
I'm really sorry, I'm from England and I just couldn't resist.
I have no clue about dogs, did you try the American Kennel Club website?
Again, please don't be offended!

Re: English lab verse american lab
I *think* the english lab is shorter, more stocky with the blockhead vs. the american which is taller, longer snout and thinner.
However, I could be completely wrong. I would love to know the answer to your question as well!

Re: English lab verse american lab
I believe that somewhere in the book Marley and Me, or in the literature about the book, there is an explanation. One of them is more commonly bred for domestic life and temperment than the other. I cannot remember which was which.
The American one and the British one have different accents, so you should be able to tell.

The Brit asks permission before he pees on your shoe.....
OK the American is larger - taller but leaner. He has a blockier head. Bred for fieldwork originally.
The English version tends to be shorter and chubbier, likes to hang out by the fireplace, not quite as energetic. The muzzle is shorter and somewhat pointier, with a smaller head and slightly smaller ears.

Re: English lab verse american lab
Besides the English being smaller and stockier, I also believe they are said to be less hyper. If I had even known there were two different lab breeds before I got my maniac, I would have looked into the English type.

Re: English lab verse american lab
English labs are shorter, thicker coat, blockheads-they are breed more for show dogs, they're much calmer.
American labs are taller, more rounded head, thier coat in thinner and somewhat more coarse...they are breed for hunting...they are MUCH MORE HIGH ENERGY.
both are incredibly smart, wonderful, loving dogs....but American labs NEED TO BE exercised or they can be destructive, and the puppy phase is hard to get through-they tend to be more anxious, and they take longer to bond with thier master....there's a lot of info on the web about the difference between the two....
