Vet freaked me out

He told us that when we bring Jersey in to get fixed we shoiuld consider haviong her back "thumbs" taken off! The thought is freaking me out and I was so disturbed by it. He said they don't use them and they require alot of grooming, etc. Has anyone ever heard of this???

Re: Vet freaked me out

they are not really thumbs... they are called du-claws...

most breeders have them removed when they are a few weeks old... or even just born..

one of our dogs has them... one doesnt however they are small dogs... they might get caught on things and can cause harm to herself like having it pulled out when it got caught on something....

its all up to you. they wont notice that they are gone

Re: Vet freaked me out

Of my 4 dogs only one had their d-claws removed. As a pup they were already presenting a problem & to have them removed as an adult is painful for the dog & has a longer recovery. It is up to you though.Chat Icon

Wow, I can't believe this, I wonder if it actually is better to have it done. I had no idea they could end up being problematic. OMG this is hard. I feel terrible about having it done, but if it is beneficial in the long run maybe I should. I'm so confusedChat Icon Thanks for the input!Chat Icon

Re: Vet freaked me out

None of my dogs ever had them removed - larger breed dogs. They tend to be problematic for herders since they could get caught on underbrush and fences. Not sure what the threat to their dew claws is for a house dog tho...

Yes, our pooch, Yogi, had them removed when we was a puppy.

ETA: DH had a dog who had his "thumbs" and the nail grew like crazy! It curled and the dog hated when you touched it. I think it is easier to get it taken out.

Bella's were taken off before we got her. I have never had a dog who still had them.

Does your dog show any signs of it over-growing or does the dog lick that area a lot (indicating irritation)? If not then I'd have a much more serious & involved conversation with the vet. All my dogs are small & have very thin d-claws, so they are more sensitive. DHs larger dogs never had them removed & never had a problem with them , even his husky.

Re: Vet freaked me out

I suggest you get them done especially if Jersey is still young. Cooper still has his and on 2 occassions he ripped them both out but the Dr. said he was at an age where it would be too painful for him and the recovery would be longer than if he had it done as a puppy... we just make sure they're as short as possible now.

Not yet, but I'm afrid maybe when she's bigger it will. I guess i will have to have a more in depth conversation with the vet.

Re: Vet freaked me out

Also I would look on the AKC website to see if this procedure is recommended for Jersey's breed.

I would. To have it removed in adult doggie years is more painful & takes a longer recovery time.Chat Icon
