When grading papers.....

I am super curious about this, something has been bugging me at a school I see a kid in and was curious to see what everyone does!!

I always grade in any color BUT red. In my 7 years of teaching, I have never used red to grade a single paper that the students would be getting back.

I think it goes back to some educational psychology class I took - something to the effect of that if a child sees red, they immediately associate it with negativity.

I tend to mark up papers like crazy and that doesn't mean necessarily that there are a ton of wrong answers. It's become a game of sorts in my classes as to who can guess what color I am gong to grade their weekly quizzes with.

I use crayola markers...usually red, purple or green. I think its easier to see corrections or marks

I use whatever is closest to me at the time.. be it red or another color.

First, let me tell you....I'm crazy

I teach five 7th grade English classes. Each period gets different color assigned to it to help me organize things. Whatever color has ben assigned to the class is the color I grade in. That way, when I'm handing things back, I can organize them by class just by looking at them.

One class is assigned the color red, so that class is always graded in red. But I also intentionally write both positive AND negative feedback on all papers (unless no effort was shown).

I try to stay away from red, but I also use something that is going to stand out on the paper. Never blue or black. I think I make an effort to put positive comments on every paper, but they need to see what they did wrong as well.

i use red, green or blue--but mainly red.

i used to believe in not using red for negativity reasons, but i'm over that. the kids really don't care, and red is so much easier to see than anything else.

I think it is ridiculous that children feel bad about themselves or whatever from a red pen. Give me a break. We assign that meaning to the color. The color doesn't inherintly have that meaning. So, basically, eventually, ANY color you use will take on that meaning. KWIM?

Personally, I think the whole 'red' issue is so old that most kids have no idea what an issue it used to be.

But, to answer the question, I grade in a different color each time. I love to switch it up and yes, I have used red, but I like hot pink, neon green and orange best.
