How do you get your dog to stop barking when people come over?

This is out LAST battle with Fred. We have tried eveything. He is soooo good now with us but when people come over he BARKS AND BARKS to the point that I get feel bad inviting people over.

Have you tried the little keychain that when you hit the button once, it creates a sound the dogs hate and makes them quiet. My MIL uses one when she takes her yorkie for a walk cause she barks at everything that moves - but the dog has now learned to behave in public and she no longer really needs to use it, but does pull it out once in a while when the dog gets out of hand.

You can also try a spray bottle with water in it! That works for otis when he starts to get like this now I just have to put in on the counter and he knows not to bark then we give him treats for being so good!!

We tried to teach the "quiet" command. I read about how to do it, but it did not work!!!!! My dog only barks at some people, though.

It took us a really long time, and they still slip up with a brand-new visitor, but in order to get any attention we made them do a sit - stay. Once they do they get pet. Then we do a "heel" and allow them to walk with us into the kitchen, where they do another sit-stay & get a treat.

It took about 3 months of doing this every day, but they got it eventually.

we have tried to teach the quiet command as well...it works sometimes...but not always...they just get so excited when people come to the door...

Jen, Dakota is the same way. My parents recently have taken to putting her in their bedroom right b4 the company comes and then they let her out after the company is there for 10 minutes or so & at this point she just comes in, sniffs them and kind of lets them be.
