Re: those with pet insurance
Not a heck of a lot!!
I think it only really kicks in when you have major issues....if I had had it when Ebony got Bloat, or Meningitis, there's 10K I wouldn't have had to shell out, basically.
We got it for Scout because I DIDN'T have it for Ebony -- and this way if God forbid anything DOES happen, he will be covered.

Re: those with pet insurance
It does alot for us Our older cat had some issues and thank god for the pet insurance! It has paid for itself this year almost 3 times already. We have to pay the bills up front, but then send them in. There is a 50 deductible, then we get certain amounts back for her procedures.
WE had over 1000 in bills and got over half back! Plus, there yearly checkups and shots are 100% covered

This has been my experience as well. Thank goodness I haven't had to use it much, but any claims that were submitted I never had a problem with. \

Which insurance do you have? We are going to get it for Misty and Espresso, but we can never decide which one to do.

Re: those with pet insurance
The only one I had looked at was the one they offered me from NSAL and it was a waste. I would have been $24 a month for my 2 dogs and it covered $500 per illness and $1,000 per accident. Don't think it covered anything else. I don't think that would really be enough for much

Re: those with pet insurance
A lot. I get:
$500 a year if I am sick and I need to put my cat in a cattery. If the cat is lost or stolemn I get $500 for advistising and a reward. And for illness and injury including hospitalisation, referral and medicines $8000 a year. Doesnt include regular visits etc.
I pay $13.80 a month per cat. I live in Australia and pet insurance is popular here so I dont know if they have stuff like this in the US.

That is a good idea. I got insurance so that in the event something were to happen and it would be too much money, I would be covered.

Re: those with pet insurance
I think shots and visits for the most part are not covered. Theya re considered routine.
But if your pet gets sick, that's when it really kicks in. You just never know...

With VPI, there is a 'routine care' package you can add on to their regular plan. This covers some shots, checkup, etc but I found that the price you pay for the special add on package is the same if you would pay out of pocket. So I'd rather just pay it and not deal with 3 months of paperwork and claims.
We had regular coverage, not the routine care- and the 2 items that my cat had over the year (Anal gland issues and tapeworm) were not covered under ANY of their plans. It took them 4 months and a couple of hours of screaming at them for them to figure out they have a rider saying those things are not covered.
For about an hour on the phone, the claims person did not understand that a fecal exam was a TEST, not a DIAGNOSIS.
Needless to say, we did not renew.

Re: those with pet insurance
when i looked into it i learned that it does not cover specific medical conditions in dogs whose breeds are prone to such conditions. for ex.--specifically excluded - back surgery for a dachshund. the only reason i looked into the insurance is b/c i have a breed that is prone to such terrible back problems.
i didn't look into a lot of plans, though. i am also wondering how they would handle a mixed breed dog and what if my dog were only 1/2 or 1/4 dachshund. as it is, i have no akc papers on him b/c he is a rescue.

Re: those with pet insurance
IMO it's not worth getting the insurance for routine visits. It's for the major stuff like surgeries etc. I have 70% coverage through Petcare (Petco company insurance) My AB just had $2000 surgery and they covered $1600 so for me with an accident prone, poorly bred dog it's worth it. Or maybe I can just invest in some bubblewrap and wrap her daily??? I would suggest Petcare over VPI. I have had both for years and tested out the plans.
