Ladies I need some very honest opinions...

DS's party is 4 weeks away...aaaaaagggghhhhhh I can't believe it!!! Anyways we are praying for good weather but as you know there is always a chance of freaking rain. Now we are expecting close to 50 people. It's in my parents backyard since they own the house next door to theirs that really gives us 2 backyards to use.

We looked into renting a tent and they want too much money for it. And the way the backyards are situated getting a tent in may be hard. Anways One of the solutions I came up with is to use a garage. In the next door house that my parents own it's a two door garage DH and my brother park their cars their. They would have to park their cars in the street that day which would not be a problem. Also in the backyard of my parents house there is a Awning that covers a good portion of the backyard. So I was thinking of using this space as well. Fitting 50 people into my parents basement will be very tight but it may have to be a last case scenario. Cancelling is not an option. The rest of June is full of parties for us and a possible trip to Lancaster.

My question is...Is it incredibly cheesy to have a 1st birthday in a garage? The whole party wouldn't really be in a garage. Like I mentioned we could also use the awning space. I know people would be all over the place but then again arent' people usually all over the place anyways at a party?

Remember this scenario is only if it rains. If it downpours like a monsoon it's into the basement. Sorry Charlie...

I mentioned this to my SIL and she made it sound like it was cheesy. She didn't come out and say it but she was like "well to be honest with you, I wouldn't want pictures of my son's 1st birthday party to have a garage in the background"

Not all his pictures would have a garage in the background...

She made me feel so bad about it...Chat Icon

Oh could you give me the number. The only problem with this is that I had called this other place in LI and they said they couldn't do concrete or that they would charge more. Give me the numnber anyways it's worth a shot. If they do it for $250 then I'll definitely do it...the local places i've called all want triple that price...Chat Icon Chat Icon I live in Queens by the way...

I would rent the tent. Not knowing what your garage looks like, I can't really comment.

Re: Ladies I need some very honest opinions...

Does sears sell them?

A tent is very chancy because like I said my parents backyard is a little tricky looking. My dads got grapeviness all over the places. So he's got these poles where the vines grow on and those are taking up a lot of the space of the back where a tent would go...

It's got a little space where we store stuff. But it's mostly room for two cars. We could always get big white sheets to cover the boxes we have. And I would makes sure that no storage stuff would show in pictures...

I have very fond memories of a big 4th of July party that ended up in my parents garage due to rain. I was about 10 but I thought it was great. You can make it work if you need to. Balloons and decorations can do a lot to set the mood.

Re: Ladies I need some very honest opinions...

I think you have to do what you have to do - hopefully it doesn't rain, but if it does, decorate the garage and you have a party.

If anyone doesn't like it - they don't have to come or they can leave.

Your DC will never know the difference.

Its not like you are having a party will all intentions of having it in the garage, it is a back up Chat Icon

Hey I'm new to this site, but I think I can help. I've used for the past 5 years an entertainment company called Little People Entertainment and they've done a great job for all my parties. They can do everything from decorations to singing and dancing with the children or even a puppet show if you want. You should give them a call and see what they can do, who knows what they would suggest but with good ent. and some decorations no one will pay any attention to it being in the garage. Well good luck! hope i was of some help. Here's the # 516-374-0391 Chat Icon

Re: Ladies I need some very honest opinions...

I agree with AP you do what you have to do. For Ellie's christening we didn't rent the tent and it was raining but we had one of those tents that you put up yourself. It's was just an overhead and it was like $60 I think at Walmart and Target. It was just big enough to cover most people and food. Doesn't take up much room either. If you got one or two of those you should be fine. And it's the kind of thing that we can use over and over again for all kinds of purposes.

Oh I called them and they said that they didn't do characters or that they couldn't come at the time I wanted them to. One of the two.

I agree. Screw that. I am going to do what I have to do. If noone likes it they can leave. When life throws you lemons make lemonade that's what i'm going to do, make some lemonade. DH is a good decorator he can make any room look festive.

Re: Ladies I need some very honest opinions...

For DS christening we bought a big tent from BJ's, I don't remember how much but over time and all the parties it will pay for itself. But to answer your question just do what you have to do and don't worry about what anyone else says!

I agree, make that lemonade baby! Chat Icon Like I told you earlier, if it happens, years from now, you'll want to sleep in the garage just to relive the precious memories!

Everything doesnt have to be perfect in order for the best memories to be created.

I was just organizing what outfits the kids are going to wear to which parks
Chat Icon and John thinks Im crazy, and I thought back to our photos at the Bronx zoo or AStoria park, where our mismatched and ice-cream stained outfits and untied shoelaces and messy hair made the cutest pics ever ! Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA: Ask Claudio where they got those tents from, similar to what CLoddy mentioned, they put it on top of the concrete, those few June parties that it rained on their parade Chat Icon and guess what the funny memories from those parties are the best!

but im still hoping for your sunny day! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Ladies I need some very honest opinions...

What's the true difference between a garage and a tent? One you own and one you pay to rent? I say it's not a big deal at all, to be honest.

Re: Ladies I need some very honest opinions...

lsten...do not worry...(hard to say)
I have catered parties--done events for people and have a annual Halloween party for 175 in my backyard-u cannot control the weather,
Look at it like this--u are only looking for 5 hours out of 24 of good weather,
its very very possible.
I have had parties in all natural diisasters.
my dh surprise bday took the cake---total monsoon! everyone had fun!!!!!!!!
if u want fm me==I can help u on what to get and do-=Ii do this all the time...as long as those kids are happy they do not care!!!!
Ii wish u were not iin Queens or I would just come and set up my tent for u
It does not sound like mine would fit though.
I know its stressful...
