Catholic baptism-godparent question

My brother is catholic and we are asking him to be the Godfather, his wife is actually Christian and they are both very religiouse and the perfect choice....my question is, are they gonna ask for proof that she is catholic, how does it work?? although she is not catholic, she believes mostly the same way as us.

Hi - Im new to this board but I just went to our church to set up the baptism for our son and this is what we were told. As long as the people you choose as Godparents have made their communion, confirmation and have been baptized thenselves, they can stand up and be on paper as Godparents. If one or the other did not make all those, they can be a Christian Witness and the other person must have made all the sacrements...

Dont know if this is the rule for all churches but hope that helps...

depends on the Church. In mine we only need on Catholic godparent and the other must be Christen. No proof required. In my friend's church she needed to show COnfirmation letters for both godparents. Call your church and get their requirements.

The godparent should:

1) be mature enough to undertake this responsibility,
2) have received the three sacraments of initiation, baptism, confirmation, and the eucharist;
3) be a member of the Catholic Church, canonically free to carry out this office. A baptized and believing Christian from a separated church or community may act as a godparent or Christian witness along with a Catholic godparent, at the request of the parents and in accordance with the norms for various ecumenical cases.

You really have to check with the parish. This is one of those things that does vary, depending on who is running things at your parish. I have heard of parishes that require both godparents to be Catholic, and some that only require one godparent to be Catholic.

I am Catholic, and when I was going to be godmother to my nephew they had to know I made my sacraments and I needed a letter from my current parish that I was a member in good standing there. My nephew's godfather is not Catholic, but since I am, I don't think they required anything from him.

Our church required proof that the godparents made their sacraments and had to get a letter from their parish stating that they were "a Catholic in good standing".

We just had to check boxes that they received all the sacraments. I have to admit--I lied since I know my sister never did do her confirmation.

Both do not need to be Catholic. Your SIL can stand as a witness. All churches, however, are different and follow their own rules. You need to check with the church you want to have your baby baptized in. It is so annoying that their is no uniformity when it comes to the Sacraments. Makes it difficult on everyone.

DH is not catholic, he is methodist and he is asking his brother to be a godparent. The church doesnt/will not consider him to be "godfather" because he is not catholic. They said he will only be considered a "christian witness" Whatever!!! They also did not care to see his baptismal certificate b/c they said it didn't matter being he won't be technically considered a godparent. The only one they needed proof for was my cousin who is Catholic and is going to be the godmother. Another weird catholic thing

Our church not only requires the letter from the godparent's home parish stating that they are Catholic's in good standing but also a copy of the Confirmation certificate as well as a letter stating that they attended a pre Jordan class (the one that parents are required to take)
