I know the entire world is not TTC but...

...do you think that most adult women of childbearing years are aware that there are a very limited amount of days in a cycle that a woman can conceive?

I only ask this because every damn week, a fairly young female co-worker, who doesn't plan on having children says to me "No baby yet?" Do people think this can happen whenever we want? I would understand this question coming from a man sooner than from a woman.

Long before I was married, even when I wasn't TTC, I knew that there were 2-3 days tops in terms of possibilities.

Re: I know the entire world is not TTC but...

Unfortunately, I don't think every woman is aware of this. After being down this road this past year, and learning as much as I have about not only TTC'ing, but my body as well, I'm almost angry that something this important is not taught to girls in Health Class. For me, I know that if and when I have a child and if it's a girl, I will be sure to teach her what I've come to learn on my own (and of course from the wonderful ladies here).

Honestly, until I started TTCing I had forgotten what I learned in High School Health Class! Chat Icon I had been trying NOT to get pregnant for so long I had to do some major reading to catch up!

When my friend was a senior in high school she said she continued to have unprotected sex during the middle of her cycle because she thought that ovulation was the time you couldn't get pregnant. Chat Icon

Sadly I don't think it's something a lot of women think about unless, or until, they begin to have trouble conceiving.

Re: I know the entire world is not TTC but...

I actually thought that you were able to get pregnancy like 4 or 5 days a month. I had no idea until after reading these boards how difficult it is to get pregnant-- even if it is only a few days out of every month/cycle.

In a way-- I am happy that my curiosity got the better of me, and I have been reading this board for months and months. We were originally going to start TTC this summer, but will now wait til late December. This just gives me more time in a "heightened awareness state" to learn more, etc.

I read posts on here all the time-- of people who are TTC, and they say, I expected to get prego right away, or I thought as soon as we started to try or have sex sans protection, it would just happen.

What I am saying is-- aside from the # of days, the chances seems to be so finite.

I think people's ignorance, especially from younger, single people, is that it has been so ingrained in us, from junior high, that if you have unprotected sex, you WILL get pregnant. So, for someone of this group to know that someone is trying-- they cannot comprehend what the problem may be, based on their life experiences.

I have to say, I had no clue, until about 5 years ago. I learned all about it in womens Psychology class in college. I always new you couldn't get pregnant just any day of the month, but I wasn't sure exactly when you ovulated.

I totally agree with this. I think so many women do not realize how short one's fertile period really is. Honestly, I didn't know until I started reading and researching ttc. I thought it was more like a week, when it seems like it's really just one or two days tops that you are actually fertile. What was even more surprising to me is that only 20% of perfectly timed bd will result in pg!

And for someone my age, even under the perfect conditions, it is actually 10-15%. It decreases as you get older.

Oh wow, I didn't realize that.

It is amazing how most people think getting pg is so easy!

A woman is born with a finite number of eggs. That's why. As she gets older, she drops fewer eggs.

Re: I know the entire world is not TTC but...

most people are not aware of how perfect the timing needs to be because they are never taught this - they are told to abstain from sex or use protection as a student in school but never actually taught about reproduction (imho) - it really is a shame

Re: I know the entire world is not TTC but...

I actually think most women do NOT know...and it saddens me when women who are 36+ keep putting it off (even though they may want babies) because they're "healthy and fine" otherwise and "now's not the time"...because when the time comes to be $$ ready or emotionally ready, the baby may not come as easily. I don't think this is one thing that can be planned to perfection as anything can happen.

Waiting, even though I'm only 27, is my only regret in life.

She damn near fell off her chair when she heard 4 days. Her response was " WOW really, I have 4 kids and never knew that". Just keep the faith, thats all I can say It suc ks but we do it. Chat Icon

I got married only 6 months before I turned 36. I have no regrets though - there would be no babies unless I was married. It isn't coming easy for us, but I still have no regrets. Time isn't my enemy, it is something else. But it will happen!

People really don't realize this, even some people that do have children,
it always amazes me how there are so many unplanned pregnancies, and those trying can have difficulty,
and i totally understand how you feel i am married 6 months and am getting the question all the time, yes we are ttc but its none of their business

Re: I know the entire world is not TTC but...

Uggh. Unfortunately, no, I don't think they realize. Two years ago, I had a conversation with my OLDER brother. He said he was having sex with his wife EVERY DAY because they were TTC. I explained the basics of ovulation to him and shortly after, they were pregnant. Of course, they missed my wedding because my nephew was born the day after my wedding and they couldn't travel to NY. LOL But my nephew is so beautiful, that it was worth it.

Re: I know the entire world is not TTC but...

this is why I lurk over here - totally NOT TTC yet, but seriously, they need to teach this stuff in school instead of scaring us into thinking you can get preggo by LOOKING at a penis Chat Icon

I want to be educated so that when the time comes, I dont waste precious months doing the wrong thing.

I wasn't referring to your situation, I was referring to those who wait (even though married, with jobs, the "desire" for a child, etc). The ones waiting for the "perfect time". I learned at a young age that there isn't such a thing. And being with DH for 11 years, I too wanted to be married first, pregnant later, but given the current situation, we would have been happy with an accident years ago. Again, this is MY situation, everyone's is different.

But in a nutshell, most women don't know and it's a shame. They should really teach that to us all early on!

Re: I know the entire world is not TTC but...

I agree. I don't think most people know or understand everything that goes into getting pg. I think part of the reason for that is because when not TTC the message is always to have protected sex to avoid pregnancy. If that wasn't the message sent, many people may assume they have to only use protection on Day 14 or so. Many people are educated that cycles are 28 days and you ovulate on 14 even though we know cycles vary tremendously, which would result in more unplanned pregnancy So in a way the ignorance about how "easy" it is serves as contraception. But it is so hard when you actually are TTC and have heard that message over and over and then it is not so easy.
