Do they have more of an advantage?

I was interviewed two times so far with a school district. However, while I was waiting to go into my 2nd interview I got to talking with one of the other candidates who informed me that she knew someone within the district. Does this mean that I could kiss the possibility of getting the postion goodbye?

I've heard that people who know other people usually can guarentee you an interview but not necessarily a position. What have you heard about this??

Thanks for any assistance !!

Re: Do they have more of an advantage?

It really depends on who that person knows... If she is BFF with the asst sup, it is very different then if she knows a teacher in one of the buildings...

There is no way of knowing what goes on with interview committees and why someone is chosen over someone else... just try your best and try not to stress....

HTH!

i agree with the previous poster. knowing some people in a district definitely works to your advantage... knowing others will just get you an interview. i feel its a COMPLETE disservice to the students when a district choses a less qualified candidate due to who they know. jmho

and I will say this isnt always the case and I saw it with my own eyes Chat Icon

The child of a Principal (within a district, but not in the same school) was hired as a leave replacement for many months. (Im sure that WAS a "who you know" thing Chat Icon)

and the teachers that worked with this person HATED this person. Complained one after the other to THEIR Principal that they will NOT work with this person a second longer. This person was VERY unqualified for the spot, and it drove many teachers NUTS.

They basically shoved this person right out of the building within months.

Im sure it was worked out differently, how it was said, etc. Maybe they said someone was coming back, not sure how it all worked out, probably in a very "politically correct" way.. and when people asked for this person, they were told "___ went back to school to finish a degree"....
but just to show you, you better prove yourself too.

So in the end, may the best candidate get the spot. good luck

Re: Do they have more of an advantage?

It depends on the person and the district. A lot of times it means they're planning the whole time to hire the person within, but just have to go through a process. But...that's not true every time. Also, sometimes (like with my district right now) people were recommended so we interviewed them, but then weren't pleased so we're going to interview people out of the district.

Re: Do they have more of an advantage?

I had 2 friends with their grad and undergrad from NYU and both lost out on jobs on LI due to nepotism. (Both had been doing replacements - one maternity, one something else, and weren't hired when the positions became open). I'm not saying that b/c they went to NYU they are awesome teachers, but it does sound suspicious since they were already there, doing a good job, and the relative or friend of someone high up comes in and gets it when it becomes perm.

I wonder why parents don't question who gets hired in their districts.

Re: Do they have more of an advantage?

Yea, I have to admit it is very unsettling especially because I worked very hard to do well during the interview. I also know that I probably am more qualified than her. It really isn't fair...

This person supposedly didn't call the person "she knows" within the district to tell her about the interview because she wanted to "get the job on her own." YEAH RIGHT ! She knew way too much background info not to have.

Urhh...so upsetting ! Chat Icon

PS ETA- She also had the nerve to tell me that they are hiring at her other job in case I was interested...so basically she was telling me I wasn't going to get the postion HAHAHAHAH
