Passport - Cruise?

I know this has probably asked a million times probably even by me but I did a search and nothing.

Do you need a passport to go on a cruise out of NY?

Re: Passport - Cruise?

I thought the new laws were for AIR travel right now and a new date was being set for sea travel......

You are correct, as long as your ship embarks/disembarks in US waters you do not need a passport. Originally this was to change in Jan 08 but with the backlog who knows

Re: Passport - Cruise?

technically you do not need one.

but if god forbid something happens and you need to get off the ship and get home early, you're going to be stuck without one.

Re: Passport - Cruise?

if you are cruising this summer i wouldn't bother trying to get a passport. we are still waiting for our passports and we are traveling to europe in 1 week. we applied 14 weeks ago. i heard today that they are refunded money to people who recently paid to expedite their passport processing. they are just too backed up. anyway, if you call passport services and wait on hold the recording clearly states that you only need a passport right now for air travel.

Re: Passport - Cruise?

Actually, yes we needed one. We took a cruise out of New York to the Carribean, and you weren't allowed in one of the ports (forgot which one) without it.
