New NYC Teacher

Hi all! I was wondering if anyone is going to be a new NYC teacher in September. I'm starting a job in Queens and I have some questions. Since I can never get through to the DOE, I was wondering if someone on this board could help me. For example, is there a mandatory PD that I have to go to? When and where? Is there a contact person regarding salary questions etc. Please FM me if you can help. Thanks!

I am starting in NYC too.

on the DOE website there is a human resources link
http://schools.nyc.gov/default.aspx

and on that page there is a link to the teachers union site
http://www.uft.org/

each bourough also has a union office you can call. I called them and they were very helpful.

I am working in queens too, what area are you in?

There is also a new teachers seminar at the javitz center on August 22nd, where you are supposed to get all of this information.

I'm a NYC teacher. There used to be new teacher hour requirements but thankfully, they did away with them. And you didn't get paid. So if you do get paid, just go. You may learn something interesting. And if not, you'll get paid.

Whatever you do, sign up for TDA! The TRS is automatic, you just have the deductions, but the TDA is somethiing you MUST sign up for. You choose a percentage of your paycheck that will be taken out (mine is 10% right now). Then you choose where that money goes (there are 3 options, each one having a different rish...I have 20% in fixed and 80% in variable a i think). The deductions are pretaxed. It's forced savings. It's amazing how much you can have in 10 years!

GHI is very good for insurance. Also, if you can, get the optional insurance, too. Also sign up for catastrophic insurance. Very inexpensive but very important.

Keep every paystub. I've heard of stories where people go to retire and are about to get shortchanged of years. Well, they bring in EVERY paycheck and problem is solved.

That's all for now. Good luck and if you have any questions, just ask.
