DD slept on her belly starting at about 10 weeks. I read about it on here in a desparate attempt to get her to sleep longer and through the night. She slept so well, that by 11 weeks...she was sleeping through the night. It was the only way she slept! But...she decided at around 9 months, she wanted to sleep on her back, so that's the way she sleeps now

My son always slept on his belly.
Truthfully, I was more concerned about him being on his back and spitting up and not being able to move his head to the side so he could clear his throat (so that he could choke and aspirate the spit up) than I was about the SIDS issue.
Before he could lift his head well, I used a wedge and it laid him onto his side, but the second he could lift his head he went onto his belly.
I saw something about this on a news show recently and there was not a single reported case of a baby spitting up and choking on it and dying while sleeping on their back. Whereas, there have been many cases of baby dying from SIDS by being placed on their bellies.
It seems like they would choke, but Emma sleeps on her back every single night and spits up and has never choked and she doesn't turn her head. It just flows out of her mouth.

I always let DD nap on her belly with me watching (she slept swaddled on her back at night.)
It's a very personal decision. I was always nervous about SIDS, but she slept so much better and I kept an eye on her. However, I did not allow daycare to let her sleep on her belly. I wasn't confident they really watch her with so much else going on. If I was to allow her I would be required to complete a permission form.
From what I understand its NYS law that they have babies that can't roll sleep on their backs unless there is written permission from the parents. That's what they told me - so I could be wrong.

No flaming here. DD slept on her belly from about 6 weeks on. And she wasn't able to roll yet, just slept so much better that way. I made sure she had good neck control first.

No I agree summerluv, the on their belly cases can be because they couldn't move their head, and their mouths and noses were blocked by their mattresses or blankets and things head south from there. But sleeping on their stomach is still not the cause of SIDS but can cause a domino effect in certain infants that can create an environment where SIDS can occur

But I just never felt comfortable with my son on his back--I've known grown adults that have choked on vomit and I was more concerned about that--maybe it wasn't as much of a concern, but he was very colicky and I was afraid of that at the time.

Christopher has been sleeping on his belly since he was 2 weeks old. He had really good head control since he was born.

DS went into his crib tonight, on his back. He cried and cried. I went in, put him on his belly, rubbed his back for a few mins. and he went out cold.
I admit, I am still a little nervous and I shouldn't be. He's going to be 6 months old. I need to get over the fear.
I also admit once he was sleeping I put him on his back.
Now reading this, I think I am going to be putting him on his belly more. All the babies on their bellies started at younger age than DS.
Thank You for starting this post. It really helps.

Steven didn't sleep on his belly only because he really didn't show an interest. Once he started to roll, he slept on the belly and I left him.
If you feel comfy with it, than I don't see anything wrong with it.
I don't know... sometimes I'm not sure how people will react on here!
I am not too comfortable with it, but if he is, I'll consider it...
and ladies - they didnt tell me, I came to get him and he was sleeping on his belly, and I asked them about it...
ETA - ladies - THANK YOU for all of the responses - I guess I thought I was the only one going thru this, and I was a horrible mom for considering putting him on his belly...
I feel a little better about it - but not sure if I'm ready to do it - I always had him sleep on my chest on his belly - but I figured I would notice if he stopped breathing

I would defininately bring that up to the director..them not saying anything about putting him on his belly. That's a huge red flag.

Sometimes people CAN be judgemental on this site, but there is one thing to remember. People will tell you what the WANT to tell you. They can swear up and down that they follow all the "rules" and go by the book and they will be the first to tell you when YOU are wrong. But you know what, we don't REALLY see what happens behind closed doors.
So, next time please don't be afraid to get flamed. Because if you DO get flamed, just remember that we are all mommies and all trying to do our best. You know the expression, people in glass houses shouldn't trhrow stones, well I think a few moms have to try and remember that. Because untill they are in your home with you, trying to get your baby comfortable and to sleep, they have no place telling you what you should or shouldn't be doing.
Sorry that was off topic, but it upsets me that people are afraid to post because of moms who make them feel indaequate. 
ANYWAY, if you are uncomfortable with it, then you can ask them nicely not to put him on his belly. MY opinion is that it is drilled into our heads and "they" (whoever "they" are) scare us half to death about sleeping babies on their belly. When I was going to the neurosurgeon for Steven's plagiocephaly he said to me "I can not tell you to sleep your baby on his belly for legal reasons. However, I CAN tell you that I have three small babies and they all slept on their bellies." That made me feel a little better and my next baby will be sleeping on his/her belly.
