Salary Scale - Credit(s) Steps

I have a master's, so I know that if I want to move across the salary scale I need to get credits above and beyond (15, 30, etc)

What do these college credits have to be in? Education? Speciality area?

Are they suppose to be undergrad or grad classes?

TIA!

They are either supposed to be grad classes or other classes that need to be pre-approved by your district - nysut, dellacave, tei, scope, etc

Re: Salary Scale - Credit(s) Steps

every district has different rules about this... for both my district and my husband's district, to get on steps past your MA you can take inservice or grad credits, but your grad credits have to match your inservice, so if you had a 30 credit masters you can then take 30 inservice credits (inservice is easier and cheaper) once you go past that, if you want to go to MA +60, you then have to take an additional 15 grad credits in order to take another 15 inservice credits... i hope that makes sense...

with most districts you have to get your course approved first and there is a limit on how many you can take and when... my district you can only take 27 credits a year... my husbands doesn't have a limit.. . some limit the online courses, others don't... there are a ton of places that offer these courses and they can relate to your subject area or just teaching in general, but again it depends on your district...

Re: Salary Scale - Credit(s) Steps

if you already have your Master's you probably just need In-service credits to move up.

some of the vendors my district uses are:
SCOPE
NYCTD
Dellacave

Just check your contract. It does depend on the district as far as limits to: number taken a year, IS vs grad, online vs in seat time, approved places etc.

Some districts have more restrictions, def check your contract!

Re: Salary Scale - Credit(s) Steps

I agree with checking your contract. Every district is different. They should give you a copy the first day of orientation.

In my district, we have to take 9 graduate credits and 6 inservice credits for every 15 credit step. The district has to approve everything before you take it.

Also, some classes you can take online and some you can't.

I would wait and find out how your district works it and sign up once you find out. HTH

Re: Salary Scale - Credit(s) Steps

thanks.

i was just wondering because i was thinking of doing a second master's in order to improve my salary, but the inservice classes sound better.

now in my welcome letter they said for going to the 2 day orientation I get 1 inservice credit. Is that the same thing or something different?

Re: Salary Scale - Credit(s) Steps

Yes, generally every 15 hours of professional development is 1 in-service credit.

Some people do the second master's to make themselves more marketable in the future, but usually the in-service route is much cheaper. It all depends on where you see yourself in the future.

This one IS credit can be used toward your move. Again, just check your contract for the other stuff to see what if any your restrictions are. Chat Icon

Re: Salary Scale - Credit(s) Steps

Every district has their own set of rules. My district is in the process of changing ours. We now have to have classes pre-approved. We can all of our additional credits in grad classes, but not in in-service credits. My district only allows you to get half of the credits in in-service courses.

Definitely ask around once school starts.
