I like the idea of using less plastic bags. I reuse all of my plastic bags I get from stores at least once - as either garbage bags in my bathroom or I use them to bring my lunch. I would like to purchase some reusable bags so I can stop using plastic bags.

When we went to St. Barth's the markets there charged for plastic bags.
I think this idea is great and more stroes should do it.

In Ireland the supermarkets charge you per bag. Most people bring their own. I think it is a great idea, it will help reduce waste. I can't tell you how many times I see someone in the supermarket double bagging bread or putting laundry soap in a plastic bag. Is it necessary? I try to remember to bring my own bags as often as I can. I would love to see the supermarkets here implement the same thing.

I was in Ikea last month and saw the sign...then went to Stop and SHop and they asked me to buy their bags. Personally I love the plastic bags, I scoop up kitty litter in them, keep them in my small pails when DH cuts his hair and it doesn't make a mess in the pails, and most importantly..I now pick up puppy poop 10 times a day with those baggies. I hate the fact that I am being charged for bags.

This is a wonderful idea.
I use grocery bags that they sold in Waldbaums for 99cents and never use plastic bags. I even take them with me everywhere, to CVS or Walmart. I always try to avoid taking a bag.
Pathmark will credit you 2cents per each plastic bag you bring back and resuse.
I just hate waste and I try where I can and realize the ability to do so.

I do think more stores should start charging for bags.
I'm more aware of the plastic bag problem than before but I haven't been very good at bringing a reusable tote with me. I'm trying though!
On the other hand, we did start using biodegradable bags for picking up doggy poo and for disposing diapers.

Whole Foods in the city credits you $0.10 if you say you do not need a bag.
I bring my own bags to Whole Foods - I love that they do that!

I applaud them for it - so few people are making any effort, and really won't do so unless forced to. I think our environment, whatever is left of it, is so much more important than the mere inconvenience of carrying your stuff to your car. Kudos to them for taking such a strong stand. I wish others would follow suit!
I agree. Although I do reuse my plastic bags in the garbage cans and to pick up dog poop there is way too much waste out there. It's our responsibility to help out our environment. I don't see the big deal in spending 5 cents is you really feel like you need the plastic bag or just wheeling the items to your car.

I feel very strongly about environmental topics/issues so I applaud Ikea for taking a step in the right direction...however, can I play devil's advocate for one second? Ikea is actually saving A LOT of money by passing the cost of plastic bags on to the consumer. It is a very smart business move actually...they gain great PR and are named "environmentally friendly" while saving a ton of money. They are donating the 5 cents - however it is more like YOU are donating the 5 cents. They are not using their own funds - they're using your funds. If their actions were completely altruistic, wouldn't they hand out canvas bags for free (take on that cost themselves) that customers could then use when shopping not only at Ikea but other stores as well that still provide plastic bags?
As I said, I applaud Ikea because although they are helping themselves, their actions are helping the environment and spreading awareness. I'm just interested to hear what you guys think!

I don't think they are in the business of being completely altruistic. their business is still making money and reporting to their share holders.
and I don't think the consumers are taking on the cost, since Ikea is still purchasing the bags from the manufacturer, and are giving away the money they charge the customer. so I'd say they are about "even" in the whole deal, the customer is out 5 cents, but the environment (hopefully) reaps the benefits.
I don't think any company, no matter who evironmentally friendly they are, should GIVE away bags. I think as people of this planet, we need to take responsibility somewhere...and picking up a $5 canvas bag is as good a place as any to start. Anyone that can't go buy a bag probably won't make it a point to bring it shopping with them anyway.

I love that they are doing this - it makes people more aware that the plastic bags they get in every store for every little item are unnecessary.
Ikea also sells reusable bags for something like 75 cents, and they are HUGE. So they are also giving the customer the option of purchasing a reusable bag instead of paying for the plastic ones.
I don't agree they should be giving away canvas bags - it is a business and they are still looking to make a profit, but are being environmentally conscious along the way.

Seriously it's a great idea, we should get into the habit or using tote bags. WHen I lived in Spain nobody used plastic bags - but that started to change with the arrival of the "hiper"markets, which is a shame...going backwards instead of forwards..
ETA - when I go to Dairy Barn, they want to put the milk in a bag...NO!
When I go to Target, if I don't have bags with me, I make them FILL each bag so that I use less.
And grocery shopping - I ask for paper - and the really bright ones put a PAPER bag INSIDE a plastic one for me....

ITA. That's exactly how I felt when I went there. I felt it was showeled down my throat and was "forced" into the concept. I did not buy the bag. I did not need it anyway. Some people who were buying some small items (candles holders, etc..) were putting the products down by the register.
While the concept is good, what bothers me is that I don't think "I" should have to pay for plastic bags if "they" are taking credit for the donation. Am I not the one who just made the donation by buying the plastic bag? I would think if you want to claim the donation as "yours" you should take it out of "your" profit.
I don't have a problem not using plastic bags, although I use them as garbage bags so I don't feel I "waste" them.
I like the idea of fabric bags for multiple usage. That's how I was raised anyway.

This is irksome to me. When I go into a retail store that is not a "wholesale club," (less service/discount prices) I would like service. I know I can bring bags with me, but I don't think I would always remember and the bags I have at home are generally one size and not as big as some of the ones that Ikea has for larger items (and I don't mean for furniture). Besides, I save my plastic bags at home and use them to throw out trash, which essentially is recycling the bags. I think this charging a nickel thing is a way for them to recapture the cost of the bag and try to look good at the same time. Are they next going to charge for the synthetic string they use to tie things onto cars?
