how do you handle the salary requirement question?

If the job post asks you to submit your resume along with your salary requirements what do you write?
I was going to submit a $ range & then say negotiable.

i don't list my salary requirements when i'm actually first reaching out with my resume and stuff. that was the advice of my mentor from college and it never seemed to be a problem doing it that way.

also, my experience has taught me not to give a range but rather, an exact dollar amount. when i gave a range, i was given the lowest dollar amount when i got the job.

ETA: My friend gave me a tip once -- think of this like a game. when you do talk about $$, give your amount - then keep quiet. don't say you're negioable. just let the other person talk and just keep saying to yourself 'the next person who talks loses, the next person who talks loses.'

I say my number +

for example:
Salary requirement is 70,000+ per year

I never give a range. They will give you the lowest possible on your range.

I state my salary requirement. It's NEVER negociable. Otherwise, it sounds like you are desperate and whatever you stated before becomes open for discussion. You lost all ground.

To me this is a red flag that the company is looking for someone to hire at a bargain or below average salary. If their salary is competitive for the position, there should be no need to ask you how much you want to be paid for the job.

I just came across this now.
When asking for a salary requirement, I usually reply with my current salary + or last salary +.

This helps the recruiter determine if you are at the right level for the job.

There were a few jobs I responded to and I had a feeling I was overqualified. I asked them what the salary range was. They were 30K lower than my salary!

It's important to know what level you are interviewing for.

If a firm is undercutting you and offering you the least amount then I wouldn't take the job. You should feel like they really want you.

My last job they gave me $5k more than my requirement. They said they wanted me to feel that it was a step up and I would work hard because of it. Incentive. I was actually unemployed at the time too.
