Hmm I used to live in Poughkeepsie. Did you check out Mohonk Mountain House? I think there are a few in Rhinebeck as well...

We just discovered this place online-- decided to go to Mystic instead so we could use AMEX points to book-- but, I really loved the way this place looked, and the town looks great too for stuff to do.

I've stayed a few times at The Inn at the Falls right near (or maybe even in) Poughkeepsie. It's a short drive to the prettiness in Rhinebeck, close to a bunch of vineyards (I know we went to Rivendell and a few others near New Paltz when we were there), and easily drivable to FDR's house and the Vanderbilt Mansion. It calls itself a Bed and Breakfast but it's a little big for that. It's an inn with 30 rooms or so. VERY not corporate feeling or anything, though. It's convenient, the rooms are really big and pretty nice, there are a few nice common rooms with pretty views of a little creek with a waterfall (little but pretty!) where you can lounge around, have coffee and pastries whenever. There's also a game room upstairs that's always empty and has ping pong, pool, air hockey, etc. That would be fun to kill some time at with friends.

It's a cute place and we've stayed there about once a year since we've found it.

Here's the web site: Inn at the Falls

I would recommend The Peach Grove Inn or the Inn at Stony Creek both are in Warwick, NY with plenty to do for the weekend. Apple picking, the Drive In!!, Shawangunk Wine Trail, spa in nearby Vernon NJ Crystal Springs

Nearby Sugar Loaf Craft Village (also a 2nd vote for above posters Recomendation for the Sugar Loaf B&B!)

Restaurants:
The Dautaj Wonderful!
Zana D LOVE this place!
or Cafe ala Mode right int he village for lunch -great wraps.

Bellvale Farms Creamery - Best ice cream!!
