Interesting info about flight times and delays

For a flight to Phoenix, the flight time on my itinerary was listed at about 6 hours.

We board the plane an the Captain announces that the flight will be about 4 1/2 hours. I asked a stewardess how our flight just got so much shorter, and she says that flight delays out of JFK are estimated to be 1 1/2 hours (most of which is sitting on the runway). They started building it into the estimated flight timeto avoid complaints.

We noticed that on our last flight out of JFK too. I'm glad they do it, actually. The past few years have gotten crazy - whenever we fly from JFK we sit on the runway FOREVER just waiting to take off, so it's really helpful to have an accurate idea of what time you'll be landing.

I noticed the flight times on the reservation are always longer then the actual times that are announced when you push back from the gate. I always thought it included the normal taxi time to and from the gates; I had no idea it built in delays as well.

JFK is awful like that..

We were flying from Kiev,Ukraine to WAshington, DC via JFK and had a four hour delay before we boarded the plane.

When we got on the plane, we were on a HUGE line on the runway.. the flight attendant was yapping away to someone that "this happened once, that the line was sooo long that we had to actually turn around to refuel and get back in the line again". After traveling or like 14 hours I wanted to slap her for saying that.

Luckily, it didnt happen.
