NYC Teacher With a Possibility Of A Long Island Job Offering..Can I TRY To Negotiate Salary/Steps With The HR Director?
Please advise. I am a NYC teacher in my 8th year. Because of the contract increases this year I will be making 9,000 more then I am at this very moment, bringing my salary to 69,000 from 60,000 at this present day.
If I get an offer from an interview on I just had that looks VERY promising can I try to negotiate? I know they are a middle of the run Suffolk County district with not a lot of $. I will of couse take a step back considering gas $ from where I live out east to Queens. wear and tear on my car, etc. But how much of a cut would one take? If I am lucky to get them to start me at step 5 that would be 60,400 which is where I am now but remember that in May I am up to 69,000. ANY ADVISE, PLEASE!!

I don't think you have room to negotiate at a LI school. Most positions have hundreds of applicants willing to take what they will get.

You can try to negotiate the step they start you on, but honestly, I wouldn't push too hard. I think many districts have a "formula" that they use, and if you push it - they may go with someone else (unless you're in crazy-high demand).

I agree. You might want to take into consideration other factors (including the ones you mentioned) in regards to moving.

not necessarily true--you definitely have room! it doesn't mean they'll do it, but try. i negotiated when i got hired in my current district, and i had only been teaching 3 years at the time. they raised me a step to be more in line from the job i left.
you have nothing to lose by asking to be raised a step or two. tell them WHY you deserve it. you already have the job by the time you do salary, so they can't not hire you at that point.
just because there's 100s of candidates doesn't mean they're qualified for the job. someone who has many years of experience is worth more than someone fresh out of college, which is why it's so difficult to get a job without experience.

you might depending on the district. i know if it's my district you won't hav a chance in H e l l of negoiation. What district. FM me and I'll tell you if it's my district.

They gave you salary step information already????? Usually you don't see that until you meet with the superintendent to sign on the dotten line. Honestly, I would say how many years you have been teaching and see what they can offer you. my district put me on the step i had with prior experience. however, some might say put you on Step 5, instead of step 9 for budget reasons. also, you have to factor in your education level too.. .step 5 with a Masters is probably more $$ than Step 8 with a bachelor's.
honestly, if it less than you're making in the city (which honestly i highly doubt--my salary went up $12,000 in ONE year moving to LI) i would still take it. a commute that you can manage (less money on tolls, gas, parking, wear and tear on your car) plus the time you save and your emotional health is worth being paid a little less. plus all the other perks to LI will make it worthwhile.

I have two friends who came over with 9 years experience at NYC schools.
One negotiated more steps = more pay.
The other just accepted the first offer not even thinking to negotiate. I would def. try! Your already hired tell them you have other friends that did it. GOOD LUCK!!
