Observation/UPDATE

I am a new teacher in a new school.. I am being observed on Monday by my principal.

UPDATE: I am using the book, thank you, Mr. Falker my lesson is identifying character traits and providing proof... The question I have,, is it ok to read the whole book about 20-25 mins while I am being observed? TIA

Re: Observation

I want to say I used the book Stellaluna for my first observation in reading in the beginning of the year because of it being a bat and halloween approaching. I had done more of story elements lesson with it, but we did talk about her character traits. It was cute.

Re: Observation

Connections mini lesson
Memory mini lesson
Predictions mini lesson

These are all pretty standard in our school, and would definitely work for 5th.
I have picture books I use for all of these if you need ideas.

Re: Observation/UPDATE

when i use that book, i do it in two days. not because its terribly long, but if you want analyze the character, you will be tight for time.

no, you really should never read a book during an observation. that's a big no-no. pre-read it with the class and then during your observation tell them "remember how we read this book yesterday. well today we're going to revisit parts of it and complete an activity based on it..." you can read a few sentences to make a point, but definitely do not take 20 minutes reading a story!!

Re: Observation/UPDATE

I would read the book prior to the observation lesson and recall facts from the story and ellicit information from the students as a review.

Re: Observation/UPDATE

I would not read the book during the observation, especially for that long. Maybe choose a small section from the book, if you need, but I wouldnt read for that long. Good luck!

yes... i agree. DO NOT read a book during an observation. it takes too long and what they really want to see is you teaching, how the kids react to you and how you manage their questions, etc.
