Bringing new baby home to toddler

I'm giving birth tomorrow and have a 2.5 yo DS. Have been talking to him about the birth, baby, mommy's hospital stay, etc. But I will be gone for 4 nights and he is very attached to me. Any suggestions on how to ease the transition? i.e. would you have him visit you in the hospital or just stay home with Daddy and my parents?

I would definitely have him visit you in the hospital. He won't miss you so much, and he'll understand why you aren't home. He'll see you are with a baby, and that he can hold him/her and that he is the big brother and you will both be coming home soon.

I also think that he should visit you in the hospital. It will help introduce him to the new baby and to see that you are ok too.

I think you should post this on Parenting--a lot of us have recently gone through it.

My older daughter was 20 months when the baby was born this May. I also had a c-section. I opted to only stay the 3 nights because I was worried about her and her routine getting screwed up, etc. etc. Let me tell you--she adjusted great! She did visit me in the hospital for a little while during each of the 2 whole days I spent there. Didn't faze (sp?) her at all--it's weird, it's like she didn't even care that there was a baby there.

When we got home, I made sure to really shower her with attention; like if I was nursing the baby I had her sit next to us and read a story or I would just talk to her. I put a chair next to the pack and play so that she could get closer to "help" change the baby. We still put a chair up to the sink when Abby gets a bath so that Katherine can wash her feet--so cute!

Good luck with everything and I hope it's a smooth transition for you!

My DD visited me in the hospital and she loved it. She didn't give DH any problems

I agree.

And also maybe get him a toy or something. When my mom brought my twin sisters home, she greeted me with a baby doll (so I had my own babyChat Icon--I was 2 years old). And whenever my mom gives a gift to a 2nd baby she always get the 1st child something -- so they aren't left out--because the baby will be getting gifts and attention.
