Cess Pools

Can anyone offer any guidance on how to tell when it needs to be emptied. Chemicals recomended, and a good reputable complany to use for all this stuff out in Suffolk County.

This is our first home without sewers and I am a bit lost on the "how to"

thanks

Re: Cess Pools

Cesspools? Or a septic system? Cesspools should not have to be emptied because they are designed to work where the solids breakdown and the liquids leach out. A septic system has a solids holding tank that would need to be pumped out as it fills.

We also are unlucky, and live in Nassau and are one of the only towns where there is no sewer connections. So we have 2 huge cesspools in our front grass (which is always green anyway!). Since they are old (40+ years) we knew we had to have them pumped last year because the water was backing up into our shower in the basement last year. Once they pumped, they added chemicals. It cost us about $450. They say we should pump every 2 years from now on, however, with the age of ours, its a big possibility that pumping could undermine the structure and collapse the cesspools. So we are being cautious because its a big and dirty expense to replace them.

We've had no problems since having them pumped last May. Sorry I have no recommendation for a place in Suffolk, but with work we've used WindRiver.

Re: Cess Pools

I just had mine pumped last week (plus chemical treatment after pumping) - and we need to replace it soon. We'll be using Ray Scudder (should be listed in phone book, somewhere in Kings Park/Northport), based on FI's previous dealings with him.

Approximately how much is it to replace a cesspool?

We haven't done it yet, but since we have 2 pools (one main and an overflow one), we got an estimate of $4000 for each! Yikes!

We got a quote of $3,200 for ours, double ring, but no overflow (it's for our very small rental house).
