Re: All this epidural talk...
Im totally with you! None of my friends have kids, so I actually went to a friends mom the other day to ask her about it. She said it was totally worth it, but, they turned it down for her to push, and she felt everything...
I guess its one of the times when you have to look at the bigger picture, sure its going to suck for a little bit, but think about what you are going to have when you are done

Re: All this epidural talk...
I'm PETRIFIED to know what's in store for us! I seriously try not to think too much into it even though we won't have much of a choice but to face our fears as time draws near
Especially us preggo women who have never had children before, were very naive to all this.

If you're not against it...take the epi...it's totally worth it.

Re: All this epidural talk...
Let me just say that you usually hear the horrible stories more than the great ones. I did not feel my epidural at all and I had a completely painfree labor and birth. Don't stress over it

Re: All this epidural talk...
I wouldnt say it was horrible, just unbearable, so i chose to have epidural.. The pain just got to be too much. Its nothing to be scared of, just think of what you get at the end.. a gorgeous piece of love... Im ready to do it all over again for my DD.

Re: All this epidural talk...
the thought of a huge, long needle being put into my back close to my spine makes me a little nervous, i have to admit... but the doc who does it will be very experienced, and i figure that the pain from the epi will not hold a candle to advanced labor contractions! so i think i will opt for the epi when the time comes

I had natural child birth so the pain was bad but bearable.

Re: All this epidural talk...
I have 2 friends who each have 3 kids...and are BOTH pregnant again. Neither of them ever had an epidural. One of them keeps telling me that her first was her easiest birth and that the drugs make everything worse.
And then I have the majority of people who tell me the complete opposite.
I'm concerned about side effects from the epidural, which makes me want to at least try to go through it without anything... but I don't want to wait too long and then feel like I'm dying and have them say "sorry, too late!"
Oy.

My sis had a small side effect, legs were numb for a bit after birth.. i didnt have any side effects. Everyone can tell you there story but it doesnt mean it will happen to you.. Best Wishes on your decision...

Re: All this epidural talk...
My cousin and I were having this conversation....she feels that its a personal decision and you have to prepare yourself mentally for what you choose to do. And you alone know what you can and can't deal with when it comes to pain. She chose natural .. no epi but she knew that's what she wanted to do.
I feel the same way she does... I want to go natural and will prepare myself to do so. But I know how much pain I can tolerate and once I go over that point and can get the epi...then drugs it will be.

Re: All this epidural talk...
I had the epi and it is a complete life saver! You still feel the contractions and know when to push...whoever told you that it hurts being administered (there is a twinge of pain as the catherer goes in but its bearable...I had it put in while having a major contraction) and that you don't feel anything is full of it...I say go for it and don't think twice about it...

Re: All this epidural talk...
I get worried when people say "The doc turned off the epi when it was time to push" I don't want to feel rips, tears, cuts, episiotomies, etc.... Why oh why would they turn it off at this point?? Believe me, I'll push when I'm told!! I won't need to "feel" anything!
Turn up the epi!!!!

Easier said than done. You will be amazed at how difficult it is to push when you don't feel anything *down there*. When I say *feel anything*, I don't mean you feel pain- you feel the urge to push as well as the tightening from the contractions. It really takes alot of concentration and strength to push correctly- at least feeling the cues will help you to know exactly WHEN.
That's why its GOOD to poop on the table- it means you are pushing correctly....

Re: All this epidural talk...
my contractions were a minute apart and hurt like hell. whoever started the rumor that they feel like menstrual cramps is a damn liar. they hurt. get the epi. i had a spinal and the pain of the needle is worth ending the contractions.

Re: All this epidural talk...
I guess I am the odd man out. I totally did not want a big long needle going in my back b/c for #1 it's not natural and for #2, with my luck I'll get a spinal headache or something will go wrong. For thousands of years women had no drugs and delivered NATURALLY so why couldn't I? I could and that is what I told myself. Labor is NOT easy by any means but it's bearable. Bearable meaning you ae not going to die of pain. I look at it as a natural process and that is why I can go with out drugs. this is what works for me but I don't tell others what to do . It's simply a personal choice.

Re: All this epidural talk...
I tried to go natural...but the contractions were so strong in my case....and I was exhausted after being there for a long long time....after I had the epi, I was much happier!!!! I wish that I had it sooner!!! If you are thinking of it, do it, it was the best decision I made!!

Re: All this epidural talk...
The pain differs from woman to woman and even then, it still differs from pregnancy to the next. With me, I got the epidural both times I gave birth but I didnt see where the labor pains were that intense. This time around Im going to try to give birth naturally [no pain meds]. I like the fact that the epidural can take all the pain away but I dont like the rules that come along with it. Like, no walking, eating or even going to the bathroom until several hrs after you give birth. I look forward to being free this time around.

I had the epi at 5cm. I probably could have held out longer, but my fear was things progressing too quickly and them not wanting to give it to me at all. So when i got really uncomftable I asked. The epi itself didn't really hurt that much, the IV in my arm was worse. The injection spot was sore for a few days but that was it. As far as walking, eating and going to the bathroom after the epi, I did them all. After I delivered, they stitched up a small tear, they cleaned me up, I BF the baby and then I walked to the bathroom to pee. The nurse couldn't believe it, but I felt fine. I also wanted to walk to my room, but tehy wouldn't let me. The suite wasn't ready so they put me in a regular room. My IL's brought in pizza and I ate. Once my suite was ready, I walked there on my own.
