If you are a NYC teacher....how are the parents?

I feel like the parents of the children in my class could give a $hit about school work until they fail the test. I have one girl who is out every Friday! BUT it's my fault if she is failingChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I teach HS and the parents don't care at all. When I call home often it seems as if I am bothering them to tell them about their children. Very frustrating!

Re: If you are a NYC teacher....how are the parents?

i taught kindergarten in brooklyn heights a few years ago. i found the parents to be extremely supportive. of course there were a few that didnt'care, but overall, they were great. i wanted for nothing: they boight books, snacks, etc. i didnt' even have to ask.

i think a lot of it depends on the aprents themselves... many are stressed out with working several jobs and they don't have the time to dedicate to their kids...even though they wish they could... some just don't care and that is sad.

I get a range- I do get parents who are concerned and supportive, then I get parents who don't care and can't be bothered. Unsurprisingly, the kids whose parents are involved tend to be the kids who do better.

I agree. It's the same for me. I used to call parents and they'd give me an attitude. Now I don't bother unless it's absolutely necessary.

Two extremes...overly involved and nonexistent

Re: If you are a NYC teacher....how are the parents?

I taught high school in Brooklyn for 6 years. In all that time, parents called to talk to me about a grade or an incident in class... a whopping two times. I'd talk to, on average, one or two parents a month about their kids' misbehavior.

Now, in LI, it's crazy - I call one or two parents every day! It's not because they're worse; on the contrary, only one or two of them slip up and warrant a call home (misbehavior, missing 3 HWs in a row, stuff like that). In NYC, I'd have 20 or 30 kids a day who misbehaved, cut, missed hw, etc., and I couldn't possibly call all of them every day, so I just kinda didn't call any of them except for the very worst. Not a great policy, but it's pretty much what was done in my school.
