Re: Does anyone find this wrong or is it just me?

That is just wrong!

At my HS, they had the fire dept come with a car that was in a current DWI crash, and asked the student counsiel ahead of time for 4 volunteers. Those volunteers sat on the ground as "victims", and an ambulance would be there and would go through everything they needed to do, to show the Class that drinking and driving was no joke, should be taken serously, esp when one of the EMTs has to "call" the parents and inform them that their child has been killed.

Needless to say, it worked. The only fatalities we had at our HS was due to cancer, or an pedestrian vs automobile accident.

Wow, that's really bad. Not to mention that it sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen.

ETA: This reminds me of what happened at a school shortly after the VA Tech shootings... a teacher told students that the school was under attack in order to teach them some kind of lesson Chat Icon

I would instead like to see students volunteer "to die". Where they cannot speak to anyone during the day, they dress as a corpse, and the teachers make a point to discuss it.

We did this in college as a part of SADD. It was called Dead Day, or some called it Grim Reaper Day. Statistically every half hour someone dies in a drunk driving accident, so for that day someone "dies" every half hour. Sometimes it got the message across, if enough of the popular kids were into it the message would hit closer to home.

But I think this, "killing" the homecoming queen is really going too far with it. I have to ask, where is she going to be that day? Is she just taking a day off from school so no one sees her? And then it'll be like "surprise, I'm alive".

I could just imagine the emotional roller coaster these kids are going to be on come Monday...

That's what they did at my HS. Kids from SADD would come during the day and announce that one of the students sitting in our classroom was "dead" and that student wouldn't be able to interact with us the rest of the day. Much better, IMO, than telling us that one of our friends was killed, just to bring up the topic.

I had a friend who was killed in a car crash in HS and it devastated me. I can't imagine finding out about that and then being told it was just a joke. It's cruel.

Re: Does anyone find this wrong or is it just me?

That is absolutely one of the most disturbing and inappropriate things I've EVER heard of a school doing. I'm sorry, but I'd never be able to support that. And what about the poor kid they're going to say died. My goodness, maybe I'm superstitious, but it's awful for that kid, too. Plus, if the kid is in on it, it may breed hostility among the class toward that student.

Also, I think it's making a complete and utter mockery of all the people who ACTUALLY have died from drunk driving accidents. These kids will NOT take it as seriously if they find out it was just a scare tactic.

What terrible form. If I were a parent, I'd be up in arms about this.

I find it entirely inappropriate.

Administration actually approved this????

This is one of the most outrageous things I have ever heard of! There are so many more effective ways to get this point across!

Not only is it wrong and unethical, but, it is cruel and sadistic. If this happened when one of my girls was in school, I would have been at the next board meeting letting them know exactly how I felt. What idiot thought this would be a good idea?Chat Icon

I am horrified to hear this! It is sending the message that it is okay to lie and toy with people's emotions in order to get a message across. The students and parents are going to be so angry, and the uproar that it causes is going to overshadow the whole lesson about drunk driving.

I generally do not post (I'm more of a reader/lurker), but as a high school teacher, I had to chime in here. After watching students grieve for nine kids who were killed in car accidents in the EIGHT years I've been teaching, I can't imagine deliberately putting them through that kind of pain. It won't serve a purpose. Like many previous posters said, they will: a) no longer trust the school once they've been lied to, and b) not learn anything in the aftermath of rage and betrayal that will follow. How does a school condone something like this, let alone come up with it?

Is the student who is allegedly dead going to know before hand? I don't think I could handle be 16 and an announcement saying I died. Chat Icon

I find this method quite odd. Most schools just go to the junkyard and get a wrecked car. They place it on the front lawn or somewhere else with heavy traffic. They have a sign that says "Don't drink and drive". That gets the message accross quite well. The method your school is going to use it very questionable.

ets: Your guidance off is going to be packed Monday with students flipping out. That is not half as bad as Tuesday morning when all the parents come down to kick azz.

The student knows and her parents are also involved and on board. I will have to see how this all works out but I feel I am going to spend all day Monday consoling fragile students and taking phone calls from angry parents. I am just so upset about this and was the only counselor to voice her opinion on the subject. I was considering calling in sick on Monday but I don't want to NOT be there for the students who will most definately need me.

Supposedly, they are going to be told that it isn't real in a short period of time but I am still SO AGAINST IT its not even funnyChat Icon

Unfortunately I was told at the last minute and have no say in the matter. Supposedly this is a program that has been done at other schools and is supposed to be "very powerful". Very messed up if you ask me. I am so upset.Chat Icon

Re: Does anyone find this wrong or is it just me?

Thank you all so much for your support on this. I really wish I had more notice to fight against it, not that anyone ever listens to me at work until something horrible happens and then they say, oh, I guess you were right.

The worst part is one of the new counselors said she saw it done at the high school she worked at it and that it really hit home to kids and worked. Maybe I am misunderstanding how its going to be presented but as of right now I am just sick of it.

If I worked in your school I would not go in on Monday in protest of the cruel "joke" that is going to be played on your students. I would also send a letter to the administration stating the reason you were not there and all of the reasons you feel the idea is unethical.

i don't even know what to say - i am in total shock that a school administration would even think of doing that. i think i will just have to agree with all of the above posters - and i will be thinking about you on monday.

here is an idea - would it be possible to "foil" their plan? spread the word throughout the school district that this fake death will be announced on monday - do you have numbers of some of the parents?

Re: Does anyone find this wrong or is it just me?

I agree with all of the above posters about how wrong it is.

I also have a problem with the assumption that the student who will be 'killed' needs to be a homecoming queen. There is an assumption here that the more pretty and popular the 'victim' is the more tragic the loss? I dont know - but it reinforces the social divisions that already plague high schools.

This is just wrong on so many levels.

Re: Does anyone find this wrong or is it just me?

This is sick and completely unethical. I disagree with this heinous attempt at "teaching a lesson", and I would be among the first parents to call if my child attended that school.

Are you sure there is absolutely nothing you can do to stop this? Is your BOE aware of this sadistic and cruel way of teaching a lesson? Maybe they should become aware...
