Italy - 2 or 3 city vacation
We are hoping to plan a vacation to Italy in July and would love to hear advice from anyone who has done 2 or 3 cities there.
So far we are thinking of flying in to Rome, then on to Florence and finishing up in Venice. Is 8 nights/9 days enough time to see all three, or should we concentrate on two? Is it best to start in Rome or in Venice? I would prefer direct flights, so what airlines are the best?, etc., etc.
Any info at all would be greatly appreciated!
TIA.

3 days in each city would be more than enough. Everything in Rome is within walking distance of one another. Venice and florence can definatley be done in three days each! Have a great time!! Florence is my fave!!!!!!

I agree. I would probably do an extra day in Rome, since it was my favorite and less in Venice or Florence, which are smaller cities. I found Venice pretty touristy and had my fill in 2 days. Definitely do all 3.

I agree as well, a week is great if that's all you can do.
We did 4 days in Florence and 4 days in Sorrento.

I did 2 days in Venice then 2 days in Florence and 3 days in Rome...I thought it was perfect as long as you plan your days and get tickets in advance. It also depends on how much time you like to spend in museums and at sights. I like to move it along so the length of my trip was perfect and alowed for lots of shopping too!!
If I had to extend I would extend Venice and spend another day at the beach...it was beautiful!

Re: Italy - 2 or 3 city vacation
I've been to Florence and Venice, but I'm saving Rome for a trip that will focus on just southern Italy. For me, two days was more than enough in Venice, I'm glad I seen it and I did enjoy it, but I won't be returning. Florence on the other hand captured my heart! I'll certainly be going back there, I recommend at least four days because you can also take beautiful day trips from there—a Tuscan winery and a visit to Siena are my suggestions. I would also think Rome would require at least four days as well. Have a great time!

Thanks, everyone. You have all been very helpful. My parents went to Venice and actually loved it, but I do think 2 days would be enough. Maybe we will do 3 in Rome and 3 in Florence.
Who did everyone book with? Did you plan everything yourself or use an agent?

ITA - This is what we did. I'd start with Rome. By the time you get to Venice, you're a bit tired !! - It's more of a city to wander around in ........Rome is just Go go go !!

Re: Italy - 2 or 3 city vacation
I think it depends on what type of vacation you want to have.
Three days in Rome would mean that you probably have to pick and choose what you want to see. If you want to go to Vacatian City, that in of itself is an entire day. But if you're okay with just seeing the major sites, three days should be enough.
Florence is beautiful. Three days there should be sufficient. Definitely make reservations to all museums that take them. Watch the sunset from Piazza Michelangelo. Eat a lot, drink more.
Have a great time!

Re: Italy - 2 or 3 city vacation
We are going to Italy in December and doing 4 nights in Rome, 3 nights in Florence, and 3 in Venice. I've booked everything myself, instead of using an agent or tour. Check out Trip Advisor and get a couple of books - I've been reading Rick Steves Guide to Italy and Frommers.
FM if I can help!

Re: Italy - 2 or 3 city vacation
Thanks again, ladies. I'm getting very excited already!
It's hard to figure out the accomodation, but I will check Trip Advisor and Rick Steves. I have also checked Frommers online, which is pretty helpful.
