FOUND a dog today...The owner found him!!!
I went to pick up my DD and found a black lab in the Massapequa area. No tags of course. Does anyone know if someone lost a dog today?
What do I do?
UPDATE
I'm so happy right now. I just called the shelter to check on the dog and the owner came and got him. I'm so excited right now. He is finally with his parents. It would have been nice if the shelter called to let me know.

Take a pic of him and post it on Petfinders.com, call your local shelter and vets, post it on Craigslist.
The shelter is the best bet if it's a no-kill shelter cuz the owners will look for the dog there first.

maybe you should take it to a vet if the dag is chipped then they can scan it and get all the info of the owners. our dog is chipped so i would hope someone would do this to ours

If you take it to the shelter, they give you a number so you can keep track of the dog.
They can get the info if the dog has a chip. And most people call the shelter first if they lose their dog. And since it is in Wantagh, it's very close....

Just a caveat, we tried to take a found dog to the TOH shelter in Wantagh and they made us sign a waiver that we approved the dog for euthanasia if the owners did not claim the dog & if the dog was not adopted in time. 
This was a while ago, but I am not sure what the policies are now.
I agree take the dog to a vet & see if they have a chip. Also let the local vets know...maybe they know the dog. Put up flyers in the area pet stores & vet offices.

Agreed. Take the dog to the vet to see if there is a chip. Also, the vet can give the dog a once over to make sure everything's okay while he's there.

Today was a crazy day.
We called shelters, Vet's, schools to make an announcement, Craigslist, Petfinder.
My SIL and I put flyers on all of the poles in the area and nothing. How do owners NOT put up flyers or look for the dog. We also talked to people in the neighborhood. Nothing.
My mother had the dog in the garage because he kept hopping th fence. This morning I found him in her house. She felt bad. I played ball with him for 2 hours straight to give him exercise.
Unfortionaley we couldn't keep him over the weekend. We called the Town of Oyster Bay shelter. They came and picked him up. I was crying. I just felt so bad for him. BUT, they told me they wait 8 days for the owners to claim him. After that they put him up for an adoption for up to 6 months. IF he isn't adopted they will call me. They will not put him to sleep.
You know. Sometimes I wonder if the family actual cares. Maybe this happened for a reason, like he found me. I know that if he is adopted, the family will love him. He really is such a cute dog and seemed very loving. I couldn't take him. He is too big and I already have 2 dogs.
Please tell me I did the right thing. I feel so guilty.

You definitely did the right thing. Although we all love animals, there are limits as to what we can do. I know I really wanted to take the Pointer that was found, but with a cat, dog and two rabbits it would have been too much....although I really want him.

Almost all of the municipal shelters on LI are kill shelters. Some just give more time for the dogs to be adopted.
And littlejoy06, I think you absolutely did the right thing. You are giving the dog a chance....something that may not have existed if the pup had been left on the street

They never call and tell you - I found a beagle last summer and had to call to find out if his owners came.

ETA: One year ago this week we found a Golden Retriever and had to call and check on him, his owners claimed him the next day.
